Also why would you think he was being belligerent when Walmart's statement doesn't match the citation
Because it's really unlikely they would call the police over a sucker, but extremely likely they would call the police if the dad was yelling and cursing at employees like they said. As for the citation, the kid admitting wrongdoing is probably what kept dad out of jail that night

If the dad was being belligerent and that's the crux of the problem then... Why didn't they ban the dad from the store instead of the girl?

Furthermore, am I suppose to feel pity for the people banning a 12 year old girl from a store after she admitted guilt and the family sought to make amends? I would yell at them too. Fuck those people. They deserve to be yelled at. And I've worked in customer service, including at Wal-Mart, my entire adult life. That's horrendous customer service and they should be fucking ashamed of themselves.

I've also known plenty of very stupid managers at Wal-Mart so this does not surprise me in the least. My local Wal-Mart was far and away the most poorly managed place I've ever worked, and the least competent manager in the store was promoted all the way up to assistant store manager before I decided to quit.

A lot of people think they need to get law enforcement involved to teach kids "valuable life lessons" (threaten them with violence) rather than just having an actual conversation.

You can do both. Honestly though, bad parenting is to blame for a lot of behavioral problems in society.

When I was working at Wegmans I'd frequently have people (adults!) hand me things like a half-full drink bottle or an empty chip bag to scan because they'd already eaten it which I thought was really shitty but nobody ever did anything about it which I guess is why they kept doing it.
Where I work people do this all the time. As long as they do pay for it before they leave (edit: and assuming it doesn't need to be weighed) I honestly couldn't care less, and aside from the occasional Karen customer it doesn't seem anyone else does either.

I think by 12 is acceptable to think the kid should know the difference between right and wrong. If the kid stole someones lunch box at school youd expect them to get in trouble for it and not expect oh they were only 12 they didnt know what they were doing and walk away Scot free.

It's not a call back.

The logic is:

The speed limit is the law. And in the most basic sense, if you exceed it... you are a lawbreaker (even if it's only 1 mph over the legal limit).

This child stole a Dum-Dum lollipop. Which, as previous posters pointed out, is 7.

As stealing is against the law, even if it's only 7; should not that level of strictness be enforced with all laws? And if you are okay with exceeding the speed limit by a few miles an hour... should you not also tolerate the same sort of "wiggle room" for other laws, like stealing?

---

Me, I think there needs to be wiggle-room. A 12-year old eating a Dum-Dum without paying for it does not warrant this level of reaction.

She should have been required to pay for the bag, then barred from the Wal-Mart for 3 months, excepting in cases where she was supervised by her parents. Then it should be forgotten.

I've got no idea why the police were involved in the theft, as it's completely inappropriate unless the 12-year old or her father turned violent.

And at the same time, I do believe it's inappropriate to blindly observe the speed limit. Circumstances dictate how fast or slow you should be going, within limits.

And circumstances should have been taken into account in this case.

Which... unfortunately to many posters here, especially the one I replied to, seem to be oblivious.

I'm really fucking confused here.

Isn't it completely legal to eat something in a store before paying for it? I hate it when people do this, but my father always did and never got in trouble. I've heard that this is perfectly fine on here for decades too.

Am I missing something or did the law change or what?
As far as I am aware, its not even attempted theft unless you try and leave the store before paying.

Stuff

The kid was banned from the store. That's a store policy issue. Not a legal one. Unless I'm missing the part about her being arrested or something. Based on this from the article it doesn't seem it went that far:

Walmart declined the money and also declined to press charges for theft.

She probably wouldnt have done it but thats not the point. By 12 a kid should know the difference between right and wrong. As I said earlier. Had the kid stolen someones lunch box at school the kid would be responsible and punished and rightly so.

I asked the question of what age should a kid be before they should take responsibility for their actions. I didnt get one serious answer. So Ill ask you the same question.

If a 12 year old should still require constant adult supervision at what age should they take responsibility for their own actions?
