Unless it was especially egregious, that's a fairly common occurrence.

Yeah, like was there special circumstances surrounding this? The player might have been benched because hitting the player may be the result of losing control due to arm wear.

It can happen very rarely when the pitcher is unable to react to a hit ball in time that is launched right at them. Caused a few nasty injuries.

One thing that always really bothered me about baseball is that intentionally throwing the ball at the batters head as a form of retaliation was at worse just a slap in the wrist. That shit should be considered instant season suspension on first offense. No matter if you actually hit him or not.

No clue if this instance was related to that at all but I will use it anyways as a platform to complain.

those were always pretty rare, and are even rarer these days. most hbp with intent are at the hip or lower back, and even those don't happen very often.

Agreed, but I guess the difficult thing is proving that the player was doing it intentionally. Unfortunately, a player can lose control of the ball and accidentally throw it in that direction due to biological factors at play/even just an error in their release.

I don't know if the MLBPA would be happy hearing players getting suspended over MLB "believing" someone was trying to retaliate.

I was playing with my brother one time and he hit a line drive right back at my face. My startle reflex is really fast so without even processing what was happening, I crouched down and managed to even catch it. We were both like "holy fuck did that just happen?"

Very rare but yes and it's usually a medical emergency when it happens.

Tbh, I think American sports leagues (even ones that have players from all over like MLB) just don't fully realize how much more excitement/energy comes from a dedicated international league.

I'd say MLB has a strong union with Central America and could make strong gains in Asia to create a stronger international community imo. I don't know how well it could push for in Europe, but still.
