It's nothing compared to the witty comic images I used to see in newspapers; there's no deep thought process behind. Other thanstuff like basic inequalities generally being funny, or subversion of expectations, or whatever else a joke might include, this is my take on why I like memes anyway: We use language to communicate, but sometimes language breaks down and we can't say what we are thinking. This creates a conflict and conflict is the essence of narrative, which is a very temporal thing. Much like how we add -s or -ing to words, to add a specific semantic feature to words (so because of this we can have plural words and stuff), you can add things to a narrative that modify the meaning of the narrative. So if you have protagonist, you might have something like protagonist-ing that brings you from the start to the middle, but not the end, because love interest-ing is what brings you to the end. So you can see how if you want to complete the narrative, you need 2protag1love, to make it like a chemical formula.
