Someone pushing a dictator far too far. Remember, they don't need to attack directly they just need to set off a chain of events that push others too far. It wouldn't surprise me if within 50 years we get a mini-world war.

Could you imagine if we actually got hit by an asteroid? It would be so fucking surreal.

Even in a worst case scenario climate change the poles will be livable. No war, no disease, no natural catastrophe will do in the entire human race. Some people will survive somehow even if it's really depressing.

But there's pretty much nothing we can do from a direct hit from a long gamma ray burst or maybe a solar eruption physically collides with Earth.

I used to think this too but with recent theories that a full on nuclear war may burn away the atmosphere the earth might be completely unliveable afterward.

The first option isnt likely to wipe out the entire race either. Kill a huge amount of people? Sure. But there would definitely be survivors.

Some kind of space event like a gamma ray burst or a very big asteroid. Or maybe some kind of future tech gone wrong.

We are damn near a virus. We will survive anything other than an huge astroid impact. And even then if some of the dinosaurs made it through a very small number of us could survive.

Only way for us to die is if Earth blows up.

Probably a huge natural disaster at this point.

otherwise it's going to take the collapse of existence to drop us. and even then, given enough time... who knows.

No, no we are not. It might seem like it, but you'll know the point of no return. Putin right now is the biggest threat to North America. But he hasn't challenged the continent yet. He's taking back land that his country lost many years ago. There are really only 2 countries right now that threaten peace, China and Russia. China won't start anything on their own and will back Russia assuming they go to war, but they have their own issues as they are surrounded by enemies on all sides. The moment those 2 go to war North Korea will join them, but immediately get flanked by Japan and South Korea, possibly Mongolia as well, so it will be a non-factor.

If I'm being honest here, it wouldn't surprise me if in 100 years both Russia and China are broken up into smaller countries, just to prevent any sort of super power from rising up again.

If Putin makes any moves on Alaska, it's all over.

Economic disparity leading to societal collapse
Not an extinction level event.

Climate change making the world uninhabitable
Wouldn't cause extinction on its own, but it would cause instability which could increase chances of things like nuclear war

AI and machine learning causing economic upheaval
Not extinction level event. Possibly not even civilization ending.

Genuine AI being created and turning against us
This would kill us.

A pandemic
Naturally occuring is highly unlikely to be an extinction event, though it could lead to civilization collapse. Extinction level pandemics are most likely the result of say AI creating diseases to kill us.

A natural disaster
Some space natural disasters could. Earth based ones would be very unlikely.

Government's worldwide descending into tyranny
Not an extinction event. Not even a civilization ending event.

Bioweapons
Unlikely to cause extinction unless used by AI. Human agents would presumably want to ensure their people and allies survive.

Nuclear warfare
Unlikely to cause extinction on its own. Can reasonably cause extinction if Nuclear war is triggered after a couple decades of fucked up climate.

AI or human caused global warming + an event that suddenly lowers temperatures are extinction level events we should be concerned with.

I do worry about it. I don't know if it's likely, but I think the chances of it turning into World War III are a lot higher than people like to think.
