you pick between 2 different characters at the start of the game. You then see the story from that perspective. The main enemy is the person you didn't pick. Both characters have opposing goals and motives in their quests, and have to kill the other in the final battle. Each side is 80 to 100 hours of gameplay. And 2 different endings obviously.

Hexyz Force and Star Ocean 2 but its not really opposing forces, more like 2 stories intersecting

Front Mission DS has the antagonist side as a separate campaign.

Breath of Fire 4, but there is another one too.

I would never play a JRPG

yeah sure, still waiting to play the villain's main cast, let's say, team rocket and you have to stop nosy brats trespassing in your super secret lairs

it's a little like the blue/rouge thing in saga frontier where one of the main characters is blue and his brother is rouge and they're both going around trying to learn All The Magic

you can play as blue or recruit rouge if your main character is anyone else

I never played it but dark half on the snes is suppose to be similar to this where you are controlling the hero and villain.

The game that does this is Arc the Lad Twilight of Spirits.

You control two brothers, one is human the other is a demon. Both humans and demons are at conflict with each other and both parties clash for 90% of the game until the real big bad shows up and both parties join forces.

The game is terrible and you shouldn't play it btw.

Yeah, I came here to mention this one.

There is a Gamecube Jrpg that does this, kind of. Baten Kaitos Origins.

You play as the main character, obviously the hero. Sometimes you flash back to another group of unknowns. They eventually become the main villain that you are going after, iirc. Or the villain from the first game. I cant remember. It is a cool twist though. Maybe it doesnt count, since you arent hunting down the hero.

BoF4 kinda does this, except you don't really have a choice and are forced to play both characters in order to progress.

Front Mission 3 kinda does this. You pick between 2 factions at the beginning and you fight against party members you would've recruited in the other campaign. And sometimes mission objectives are swapped (ie: instead of "Defend the base", you have to "Attack the base" in the opposite campaign)

Both campaigns are like 60 hours each >_>

Any mainline Shin Megami Tensei game too. Although, it's usually 80% the same, then you make a choice and choose who to fight in the last 20% of the game.

Dark Half is a good example.

If you treat Golden Sun and The Lost Age as two games, they have this somewhat as well

there actually already is a game like that
way back on the snes it was called dark half
it was made by enix and never left japan though a fan translation does exist

you constantly switch perspective between the generic hero building his team to save the world
and the villain who burns villagers alive for fun and his team of monsters
both teams play a bit differently
and at the end of the game you are made to pick a side and thats the team you use for the final boss which is the other team

and had i read the topic i would have seen dark half got mentioned 3 times already :(
thought i was dropping obscure jrpg knowledge up in here but now i just have egg on my face

Yeah, I'd play that, but please make them shorter games. I don't have time or patience for super long RPGs anymore.

Pretty sure this has been done.

Radiate Stories (PS2) does this (sort of...). However, the protagonist is the same throughout but after a long intro story section you have to choose to support one side in a kind of race war. It's a very good game with up to 178 characters to recruit, although who you can get depends on which side you support. Each side of the story takes a very long time to complete and it's interesting to see the conflict from both sides.

The game was noteworthy for the ability of the main character to kick everything.

I remember the time I kicked some royal dude and got epically ganked by his entourage. Radiata deserves some extra attention.

I remember this situation being pretty minor in Radiata but that being said it should still absolutely be played since it is such an incredible game.

IIRC literally every NPC in that game can be recruited into your party but they cant level up so you cant truly customize your team because some are too weak to use for very long
