I think it started with the Chinese Tang Ping movement which basically meant lower your expectations, live modestly, don't go feral trying to compete in the rat race.
Then there was Bai Lan which means something like Let It Rot. I'm pretty sure they were trying to scrub mentions of this from the internet a while ago. It's where you go in and do the absolute bare minimum. People bought it here and named it Quiet Quitting which doesn't have as much weight to it.

I'm fairly confident 'quiet quitting' does not directly descend from 'bai lan', although their causes are certainly similar

Doing a lot less work than what is expected, calling out sick/using rest of PTO or anything like that then just leaving until they fire you or you go do this shit at another job.

I quiet quit my old job. But it was purely because I knew they were going to be assholes and let go of a lot of people out of the blue. I started to figure that, let's say about 6 months beforehand when they started asking my department to compile backups of every project we had worked on...keep in mind this was completely out of nowhere & not in our scope of work to this extent. Add that in with new upper management, re organizing etc. I could see the writing on the wall. 5 min day of meeting heads up layoffs of 60+ people online...Those 6 months of "work" were very lax for me to say the least. I already had another job lined up during this 6 month period & just collected severance pay & stuck it out.

That's not quiet quitting.

As others said, it's just doing your job and nothing more. If you were scheduled 9 to 5, you show up at 9 and leave at 5. If you were hired a specific position, you only do your job as that position, not 2+ other positions because the employer doesn't want to hire additional staff.

Basically you complete the actual minimum requirements of your job.

Someone not getting the job done they were hired to do, calling out all the time and tardy is not quiet quitting.

Is it also quiet quitting when the employer only pays the wage in the contract and doesn't go the extra mile by paying out random bonuses? Or does this shaming only work in one direction?

In recent years when I get given work that goes beyond what I think is reasonable I just ask how much extra theyre going to pay me for it.

Usually they then dont want me to do it anymore. However, it probably depends on your own personal circumstances. My last few bosses have known that I could walk out and still have another good job within a week or two, without even needing a reference. It gives you a bit of bargaining power.

that's not my problem, and it's not theirs, either, no matter how bad some weak manager wants to pawn it off as theirs.

i hope you're not insinuating that hard work actually pays off.

https://www.edelson-law.com/blog/2022/10/wage-theft-outpaces-all-other-theft-in-america/

just because you insist they actually pay the wage listed in the contract. nah, keep your eyes open, and watch your checks. learn about wage theft.

Sounds like you are the one fucking over your coworkers. They give 100%, so you give 110%. Then management decides 110% is the new baseline. Congratulations, you just gave everybody more work. You stay late everyday, then it becomes the expectation everybody stays late every day. You refuse to use vacation/PTO, then it looks bad when other people want to use what they have every right to use.

@Sexypwnstar
So where's the quit part
There isn't.

Like many fun terminologies that have popped up, the name doesn't fit what it actually is and just leaves low hanging fruit to distort what it really is.

Quiet quitting is not actually about quitting your job.

Sexypwnstar posted...

Then blame the employer. The employer is the one deciding to go understaffed expecting extra work for free.

Not the employee who is completing his/her 9 to 5 shift, completing their responsibilities for the 1 position they were hired for, then going home.

The employee and employer relationship isn't a charity, it's a business transaction. If the employer wants more work, they need to pay for it.

and the pay needs to be worth their time.
and it needs to account for a work life balance as well. If they want me to start working 14 hour days 6 days a week, thats going to have to be more than 5x what they are paying me for the 8-5 I currently work and more than the 4 weeks holidays I currently get a year
