Yeah even as a kid I never really thought they were neat or anything, they were pretty creepy even as a child. I still wanted to go though for all the games and whatnot, I remember the pizza being terrible also.

One of my earliest memories is of going to a Chuck E Cheese, and i just remember crawling through tunnels, a stage show, and lots of ugly 80s decor

Those things scared me to death as a kid. Along with the singing fish, the singing Christmas trees, etc.

FNaF did a good job of digging out that buried childhood trauma when it first released. I had nightmares for a week after just watching the game.

To be fair a lot of the inspiration also came from the fact he made a game and everyone said the characters looked like creepy mascot outfits

I went when it was called Showbiz Pizza. In the 80s/90s it was basically a place where moms would take their children for babysitting while they all chatted it up while drinking alcohol during weekdays. They wouldn't even run the animatronics unless it was the weekend or birthday party.

What is strange now is that you can request to have a FNAF theme party at Chuck E. Cheese. They won't run the animatronics but all the games and party material will be FNAF.

So again this is explained in the piece, but the original name of the franchise is, in fact, Chuck E. Cheese's. Showbiz Pizza was an attempted competitor.

Then the original CEC went bankrupt around the time of the video game crash of 1983, the Showbiz franchise bought the rights to CEC, and then over time converted their entire franchise to CEC.
