Missouri House Republicans voted to defund all of the states public libraries, in a proposed $45.6 billion state budget that will soon move to a vote in the GOP-controlled state Senate.

The Missouri House debated for over eight hours last Tuesday on a budget that is roughly $2 billion less than the one Gov. Mike Parson (R) proposed last January, cutting not only the $4.5 million Parson had slated for libraries, but also costs for diversity initiatives, childcare and pre-kindergarten programs.

have you seen those pictures of Iran in the 70s? They had universities, water fountains, cars and the women wore skirts and had hairdos, like Americans from the 70s.

I think the GOP is doing the Iran think on us now: they are insisting women dress up more, banning books, banning libraries, etc

yeah. a lot of people tend to ignore the obvious link between the US' international and domestic policies, but they're extremely clear

Yeah, my only hope is that banning books will ultimately be highly ineffective in the age where everything is freely accessible on the internet. Problem is, the public library is also the only place some people can go to use the internet as well, so idk. I'd like to have physical copies, + an external hard drive of pdfs for safe keeping.

The rest of Kansas can get shunted off into Oklahoma or some solid red populace. The rest of Missouri divided between Arkansas and Illinois.

But good lord the people of the Kansas City Metro, Columbia, Lawrence, Manhattan, and St. Louis Metro don't deserve to be shackled to the assbackwardness of the rest of Kansas and Missouri.

Revenge against protesting a book banning

The stripping of funds for public libraries was done in retaliation over a lawsuit brought forward by the Missouri Library Association (MLA), which, along with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), is suing the state over a draconian law that bans hundreds of titles in public school district libraries, including books that discuss LGBTQ issues, racial justice and the history of the Holocaust. Any school official, including librarians, who fails to comply with the law could be fined up to $2,000 and/or could be imprisoned for up to a year.
