Many times I find myself talking about the horrible things that churches do or that people do in the name of the church. However I am fair and balanced so I wanted to share this uplifting story. Well kind of uplifting since there should be no need for this in the first place.

There's something very wrong where the cost of $3.3m in medical debt has a value of $15k.

Nice. But I'm guessing this church is different than your typical one. Most churches wouldn't do this

They paid $15k to clear $3.3 million?

This whole system is fucked.

Good on them though

yeah the hospitals know these people would probably never pay

but they won't clear the debt on their own so it just ruins the person's life forever

Everything in medicine "costs" so much in order to negotiate with insurances. Specially medicaid which probably pays like 10% of what hospitals bill.

I think most churches should follow their example if they want more followers.

There's a good chance the medical debt had all already gone to collections, and probably sold to other companies multiple times.

I worked in collections for a little while, and generally what happens is:

Comcast wants $1000 from you, but they aren't getting it.

Collection Company A: (CCA) offers $900 and says they'll get it themselves; Comcast agrees $900 is better than $0

CCA then gets a cease and desist complaint, causing them to want to sell it as they cannot collect on it anymore.

CCB offers $850 for the debt, CCA agrees $850 is better than $0.

I'm sure you can see where I'm going with this. If you ever have a collection company coming after you and don't want to/cannot deal with them, just state "Cease and Desist" and they, by law; have to never contact you again. This does not mean it won't affect your credit though.

Edit: The medical debt in the country should be 100% forgiven and we should have free medical care, I was just explaining HOW the church may have acquired such a large debt for next to nothing.

Seriously, how are hospital bills not considered racketeering?

They sell the debt to collectors cheap to recoup some of the losses, then the collectors badger people with calls until the end of time.

It isn't just medical debt they do it with either.
