Omg, Im in the same boat and I cant even get bites on the $2,000/month houses. The one that I was given to rent currently has windows that do not seal and you can see the air blowing the curtains. The heater and AC break every three or four months, there are holes in the gutters that create giant ice slicks on the concrete, and the back door is sealed shut with foam and paint.

I have competition in my city that is about 70-200 people each competing to rent a house. Im seriously about to give up and go live under a bridge.

It's actually not as expensive as you think. The question is whether you find a building that can line up the construction crews without delay.

For until the home is built, you have to rent a place.

Find a home that needs a little bit of work done to it. Cost out the work. Add that much more on top of your mortgage when you take out the loan, and then have the work done on the house before you move in.

it's like I have to move to a different state to live in a decent home that's more affordable. I'm not looking for a fancy home or anything huge. just a house that's in acceptable conditions . these houses look like someone was murdered in them or that a hoarder lived there or it was a house used by squatters.

I just bought a house for 160k this pass November and I live in a small city in the Midwest. Next biggest city is about 40 minutes away. My mortgage payment is 1200 a month which includes insurance, escrow and interest all together.

The house I bought is well maintained. My only complaint is that the previous owner had dogs so the house and yard stunk up like shit but that was fixable.

But TBF I was extremely lucky to get this house. As soon as it was put on sale I went that day to go look at it and then contacted my realtor about it and also had me look inside the house that day. Placed a big the next day. The weekend pass and they said I got the house. I was lucky no one wanted to big higher than me because I've bidded for houses over 160K before and still got out-bidded.

Well as soon as people find a magical solution to the problem of "more people want to live here than we have space to fit them" I suppose these problems will go away, but in the mean-time some people are going to have to accept that as long as there is competition to find housing in high demand areas some people are always going to lose out to other people. I'm sure the people who just happened to be lucky enough to be raised in a rich area will absolutely believe that they have some sort of birthright to a house in town, but I'm willing to bet that in most areas of politics they wouldn't agree with the opposing side saying "we were here first" as justification for rejecting people who want to live in a town.

When I was a broke college student I moved in with my eldest brother and his family with no charge. I lived there for about 3 years until I picked myself back up a bit. Me and my 2nd oldest brother then moved into a Duplex which was owned by a distant relative and we were good friends as well. He only charged 500 bucks a month which me and my brother split up. I saved a ton of money until I was able to make a down payment for my house. I am extremely lucky and fortunate and privileged and I don't take none of that for granted and am grateful for this. Not everyone will have these resources for them.

My advice is to use whatever resources available for you. Move back in with your parents or a loved one who'll help you. Every body needs help.

Ehh, I'm not a fan of this framing. People generally want to live in areas close to their jobs and friends and family. It's not some weird desire. And it sucks that housing policy has allowed for such a reduced supply of housing over the past decade.

But yes, ultimately you have to do what you have to do.

The framing is admittedly a bit aggressive, but that's intentional. Obviously people want to live near where they grow up, but all the people saying they have a right to their own home in that area, independent of their income, are absolutely using the exact same arguments they would reject elsewhere.

My aunt posted on FB two weeks ago. A friend of hers is looking to rent a house (rent to own actually). 3 bed 2 bath $540 a month. House looks nicer than any apt I ever lived in. I assume by now that's off the board but it's about 30 minutes north of Dayton OH.

People are generally fast and loose with the word "rights", so I won't try to guess what they actually mean by it.
But I'd think most people just want there to be more paths to affordable housing inside large metros.

The most I'll say is that, I agree that for some, moving to less expensive areas should be a realistic thing, but they tend to unreasonably see those areas as not worth living in due to incorrect biases.
But also, moving cross country is a bitch.

But I can't think of very many homes in the US at that price range, whose residents can both afford a mortgage that high but can't afford its maintenance and repair for some reason.

Regardless the only advice I can give to anyone is to lower your standards and learn to settle.

Pittsburgh is trending in that direction. Lots of bedbug infested houses, lots of beat to shit structures and bad flips in the 300k range, and even in the less affluent outlying suburbs you're still looking at 1200+ in rent. I'm lucky to have gotten a 1k rent on the house I'm renting right now, with it being in good repair and 3br 1ba.

But also, moving cross country is a bitch.

But even in that interpretation, where they want access to more affordable housing, shouldn't we prioritize giving that affordable housing to poor people who want to move into a nicer area, rather than people in wealthy families that already live in that area who are taking advantage of generational wealth to try and leapfrog other people in their same economic band? Again, if I made a topic complaining about mandatory low income housing, a lot of people would rightfully give me shit for it. But tell them that the new mandatory affordable housing in their area isn't available to them and see how they react.

And even if you made it open to everybody, you're going to get a section 8 housing situation where you have people literally camping out overnight and sprinting towards office doors to be first in line for an opportunity to get at that limited access housing. And then once that housing is sold out, you're right back to where you started with having more people who want to move into an area then that area can support and all the non-controlled housing costs continue to spiral up as demand increases. You solved precisely zero problems and created a bunch more in the process. There is no magic bullet that will create infinite availability in an area with high demand.

OH NO! now I have to live like a poor person in a third world country and put no effort into bettering my situation so I can afford to live like my favorite youtubers! TC sounds like a spoiled brat who probably never had a job until their 20's and now that they are expected to live on their own they have no money in their savings, no credit history and don't want to live with the consequences of their bad actions. It doesn't matter if you can't have a job until you're 16 you can still found some way to make sort of income as a kid.

people in the Philippines are literally living off trash piles and you're complaining about having to actually put effort to learn a trade skill so you can get a decent paying job. Minimum wage job was never intended to allow people to live in decent homes. Poor people get trashy homes. it's just how it is. If you want a house you don't have to fix you should have bettered yourself to make yourself valuable to the job market. You shouldn't be in your 20's still making less than $25 and not having enough to move out. don't blame inflation. blame yourself for not putting more effort to be able to afford living on your own. you knew since you were a kid you will eventually move out. you sound lie you just leeched off your parents and now that they are dead or whatever you don't know what to do.
