Without having a criminal background. I had a full background check ran on me in October for work, and everything came back clear for the last 7 years. Never gotten in trouble with the law other than some speeding tickets in college over 10 years ago.

but this report I got sent back to me from a potential landlord rejected me because I had a toll road citation that apparently was escalated without me even knowing way back in 2016. I called the toll road company and they somehow said I owe $1800. Like wtf.

Anyway, I dont know how to fight this. The landlord rejected my application for my criminal and credit background. Granted, Ill admit my credit score isnt the greatest but my partner who did a joint application with has a super high credit score and makes well over 6 figures.

what do I do, CE?

Pay the fine and look for another place.

so you broke the law

fight the charge and have it removed from your credit. idk how that would fail a background check, unless it was just the credit part you failed.

But I dont want this on my record. I dont think paying the fine will remove it. Its just weird that it wasnt even on my way more extensive background check my work did on me.

I dont though. It would have shown up on my actual background check. The one this landlord did was some Transunion report. I was never charged with anything. Hell I was never even notified way back in 2016 that this was even a thing

Minor traffic stuff is considered "criminal" over there? Wow. You've pretty much got to either cause a significant injury or drink-drive before anything traffic-related reaches the criminal threshold here.

Fines arent always criminal, though. And usually dont go on any type of record lol. Not sure where you got that info haha

I believe there's different levels of background checks.

My guess is that the landlord has a ton of applicants and saw this on your report and used it as an excuse. Personally I think it's a little bit of a reach to deny someone because of that, but if you have 10 other people looking at the apartment it's easy to point out that and say they aren't allowing you because of it.

My guess is there was just better candidates.

were the only ones who applied so far. My parents income and mine combined like 4x the minimum income requirement based on the rent price, too.

I'd look into contacting your local law enforcement about getting it removed from your record if you're that concerned abot something minor from 7 years ago showing up again

Please stay on topic. This topic is about your criminal record. Whether or not he had a bad day is irrelevant to the fact that you didn't pay your toll and thus have a mark against your record.

Its almost as if we have multiple definitions for these sorts of things and by specific things traffic violations arent generally going to be criminal by default.

Which isnt likely a criminal record but rather a fine that increased over time. Generally speaking if that was a criminal record for having it that high they would likely have a warrant at that point. This more or less just seems like debt that was added to his record.

the landlord probably has a prewritten denial form that says "criminal and credit background" and TC is focusing too much on the criminal part of that.

a 7 year old debt even if it's that small does not look good. something on a town/city level goes to a collector pretty quick so this debt has probably been sold off to a 3rd party too

whats weird is it hasnt. I called the toll place and set up a payment plan. I honestly didnt even know the fees existed.

also my credit score is badbut it COULD be worse. Its 605. My income is high now(recent new job) and my partners is even higher. Im surprised we got rejected for it but I guess thats what I get for having a bad credit score.

sigh.
