Its just toxic

I worked private once and even as an engineer it was toxic

Everything was built around profits. I had to account for every hour I worked on every project and it was always second guessed

I had to maintain 80% billable hours

One year I was at 78% and got denied a raise because of it

Even worse, I was at 81% then a project manager realized he overbilled a project and had my billable hours removed

Now I work for the gov and its so much better

Taxes pay for everything

I dont have to track hours at all

Raises are automatic

Theres a clear and generous salary structure

Idk how ppl can work in a place that will always care more about their profitably than the employee

oh apparently that's true in most parts of the world...

but not for engineering in california

my last job was like that, as a software engineer at an engineering firm. They screwed me over by way underbidding a project then throwing me under the bus.

now I work directly for a company and its way more laid back in terms of hours etc. I dont have to submit any hours just finish the tasks Im assigned in the sprint

and I make way more money than I would at a comparable govt job

I'm a high school teacher.

I could not imagine a job more toxic than teaching. Constant verbal and emotional abuse from parents and students, completely on your own, smartphones and tiktok are huge issues, test scores reflecting teaching with kids that don't give a fuck, drugs everywhere, every kid gets a 50 by default so they only have to earn 10 points to graduate.

If students fail a class, they can just do the entire course in a week or two through Edugenity in Credit Recovery because all the answers for every course are online.

Only get $1000 raise a year based on service and that caps out after 15 years.

Feels so fucking pointless nowadays.

Grass is always greener on the other side. I'm actively and aggressively trying to leave teaching for a more writing/editing heavy role, because this is almost unbearable mentally and emotionally.

Government legal work outside of working with the courts isn't particularly interesting to me.

Having a government job is my gimmick. But no I really work for my local county as a DBA.

you can live comfortably in a GS-10 paygrade as an engineer

you can promote up to a higher ranking position if you really want

My old man was a GS 14 with no degree.
