I've always heard how bad and annoying it is, but I'm actually having a good time with it. At least so far. It's really enjoyable as a progression system because of how different it is from the RPG norm. And it feels really balanced with what actions I'm taking in combat. I don't feel like I have to sit there and take hits to significantly raise my HP and so forth. Was it always this easy going and people were overexaggerating, or is simplified for a modern audience? Even when current FF games try their different board systems they largely feel like derivatives of the Sphere Grid rather than unique things.

I played the game for like three hours 5 decades ago when the PS1 port came out, but I gave it up because it was too boring. I remember nothing about this particular system. I'm an older, wiser, more understanding of English, more euphoric gentleman now and I'm having a lot better time with it.

Though it's very obtuse. Right now I just found some mythril and I'm not sure if that was out of order. Feels like I skipped a step or 4.

Also, is there seriously no fucking way to permanently disable the minimap? You can turn it off but it comes back whenever you transition screens. What the duck fuck?

In the original version you could lose stats too. All the remakes got rid of that and made the game easier overall.

A lot of people just fell for the advice that you need to hit your own party to get stronger. Then after spending hours grinding, they'd get mad and say the game sucks.

2's always been the best of the NES trilogy, people just fell for misinformation.

Firion's agility stat determines preemptive strikes and ambushes, so always keep him naked until his agility goes up enough to equip armor that let's him keep his evade at 96%. Difficulty vanishes after that

If you don't hit your own party then they will have artificially low HP and when you finally fight things you can't kill in one hit you'll be slaughtered.

this remaster has a feature named "Compensatory Hit Points." You need not take a bunch of hits to raise your Hit Points; your Hit Points still rise anyway with Compensatory Hit Points

the feature Compensatory Hit Points can be toggled on and off in the Configuration menu. The default setting is On, which means that your Hit Points rise without you becoming a punching bag

Story wise yeah for sure.

But IMO the class / party create system of the first game is a huge part of the charm. FF2 characters suffer from the same problem that made leveling in FF12 original crappy.

Everyone now automatically gains 50 hp after every few fights so you no longer need to worry about raising it up

Stats no longer go down
And you can switch your on screen character

The real way to get overpowered in ff2 was always using the swap spell on weak enemies
Doing that raises all your stats every single time in every version of the game

Did they change the dungeon layouts as well? Those were amongst the worst in all of the genre.

Does dungeon layout matter when you have a dumb minimap in the corner that won't go away and you can see exactly where to go?

Characters in FF4 could lose stats as well once you passed 70 or so

Or there's Tellah, who started losing them almost immediately because he was an old ass man

Stats were random after 70 but I don't think they could ever go down.

Tellah and FuSoYa are exceptions they have no randomness all the way to level 99 and their stat downs are always fixed.

Did the Pixel Remaster of FF4 feel easier than the SNES version? I remember the last dungeon and final boss of FF4 being a huge pain in the ass when I played the SNES version but they were pretty easy when I played the Pixel Remaster.

the pixel remaster version of ff4 ruins the exp curve of the game making it so that you'll be massively overleveled for the entire game

this is the case with ff1 too which is why it's by far the worst version of ff1

They definitely could, but the odds were more on your side that they would go up.

Here's Kain as an example:
https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Kain_Highwind/Gameplay#Stats

Of course, by the end of FF4 you're likely not at the level where stat drops are a possible outcome in the first place, since playthroughs of that game typically end with your party around mid-50s or 60s iirc

50 HP is a lot to gain. That feature has been around since the GBA version, but they only gained HP equal their stamina.

I played through all of the PRs last year, and my ranking is thus:

6 > 4 > 5 > 2 > 1 > 3

4 is my favourite, but 6 is the better game. 5 has the job system and little else to grab you. 2 has a surprisingly solid story for the age, 1 is the one that started it all, and 3 is just boring all around.
