It was typical Illumination fare with Nintendo paint slapped all over it. Entertaining for what it was imo, it's not meant to be Shakespeare.

The first half of the movie wasn't very good in my opinion but the latter half was great.

They did Luigi dirty and seemed to throw game references without rhyme or reason. It goes against established Mario lore and canon which is that Bowser had met Mario and Luigi as babies too.

The plot was Bowser had the Star.
The Star had the power to destroy worlds.
He threated to use the Star to destroy Mushroom Kingdom if Peach didn't marry him.

Secondary plot was the Mario Bros. had a struggling plumbing business.
They got sucked into an unknown land via a sewage pipe that doubled as a portal to said unknown land.
Mario meet Peach. Peach tells him of Bowser's plot.

Then the two plots merge.
With the help of Luigi and Donkey Kong, Mario and Peach defeat Bowser and save Mushroom Kingdom.

Was a pretty linear plot to me.

It's a good Mario movie (9/10), but a bad a movie on its own merits (5/10). I still enjoyed it, but I can see a big discrepancy why the critics didn't.

But even that wasn't canon to the original story.

I lol'd at the pointless Kong army and them shoehorning Mario Kart in there for no real reason.

It was a terrible movie, but a great movie for my kids.

It used the only Mario lore I accept, that Mario and Luigi are plumbers from Brooklyn.

It's good.
The pacing is super quick, but it's consistently fast so it's not as big an issue as it could be. The musical cues were great, hearing Gusty Garden Galaxy in a movie theater was surreal.
Also, you get to see Princess Peach's feet.

The pop music was the only thing I disliked about it. I've never liked it in any movie.

Otherwise, it was fun. A lot of people expected more emotional or creative depth, but the games didn't have much of that either.

I thought it was good, I liked it a lot. But I also dont go into every movie expecting the greatest thing in the history of ever.

It was lighthearted fun action with cool, aesthetic environments, just like the game. They embellished the very slight plot points of Mario into having some sort of progression, as well as making Peach an actually cool character. I enjoyed it a lot.

It's a very play it by the numbers film. Is it a good movie? I would say no but it's decent for what it is, a cute and fun film meant to entertain children and fans of the Mario series.

I enjoyed it a lot. I wasn't exactly expecting The Godfather Part IV.

Granted the bar stays pretty consistently low, but it was easily the best video game adaptation I've seen.
