I think the different analog stick is the crux of it, but there are other things like the Gamecube's very specific analog trigger design.

BotW would be objectively 100x better without a stamina bar, just using Enemy difficulty as a means of gatekeeping the more secretive areas.

This is a tangent, but try playing an older 3D Mario on not the original controller. It's not pretty.
I think they require some mental adjustment but I've never had an issue of the games feeling worse beyond motion issues for Galaxy 1

I do think sprinting should consume less stamina than it does, at least outside of combat. I don't have a problem with stamina being consumed by climbing though.

You are designing a completely different game. This is elden ring

Getting more stamina to climb higher is part of BotW

I'd say I liked Odyssey better overall.

I never really enjoyed exploring in Breath of the Wild. Then again, I didn't enjoy exploring in Elden Ring much either. Maybe I just don't like exploring. On the other hand, I explored every inch of Skyrim and RDR2 and Fallout 4, even Scarlet and Violet. With BOTW it was "Oh look, another shrine."

I treat the stamina as a major way to think about approaching the game early on, and it becomes a absolute non issue later on so its fine

even the weapon durability felt pretty whatever because the game supplies you with so many weapons from good enemies

With the exception of the test of strength shrines and the shrines that just gave you a reward out right, discovering a shrine felt like its own reward to me. They tended to be fun/unique little challenges. In a weird way they reminded me of special zones in Mario Sunshine where you lose the water pack.

The shrine puzzles themselves are cool but they're so isolated from the game world and I'm pretty sure BotW has an actually single digit number of puzzles with that level of intrigue that are organically in the world itself. It's almost exclusively limited to the quests that reveal a shrine.

Early impressions say there's a ton more of that in TotK which is fantastic to hear because that utter lack of stuff in the world that wasn't either spotting a shrine or Korok Seed Concepts 1-5 was such a crippling weakness compared to how cool the game's systems were.

I dislike the majority of stamina systems because they seem to be arbitrary and inconsistently implemented (sure you can run or jog to your heart's content, but think again if you want to swing your blade or roll around more than twice in succession).

Okay so when you say this,

And this is why talking about Breath of the Wild as a fan on B8 isn't fun anymore and I'm guessing I'm not alone. The topic devolves into the same thing every single time.

You realize when you say this,

You're directly contributing to the "problem" right? Like, as stupidly facetious as my "objective" comment was, I said in the exact same sentence that limitations should be placed elsewhere and you just ignore that. Not saying I'm being any better about it, but just hopeful you can recognize why so many are apparently unwilling to honestly engage with you about the game.

Anyway, my issue with the stamina system is that there's an expectation of the player to explore and experiment with the world which directly goes against an initially limiting stamina wheel. If stamina is indeed meant to prevent you from having too much access to the world, then it does a poor job, since you can get most places in the game through some experimentation. As such, it exists more as a means to make exploration more tedious than to limit your abilities. I honestly think it was just there to incentivize you to play the shrines.

I never see anyone else talk about it, so I'm willing to admit this grievance is probably an overreaction, but I still stand by the fact that I personally would have had far more fun without its inclusion, or with its presence being lessened. It's still done better in BotW than it is in SS, however.

I don't think it is meant to prevent that - it's meant to encourage said experimentation.

Stamina can definitely be a pain in the ass in such massive worlds. Genshin does it too and it would be more fun if you could just dash, climb, swim and glide without it.

Exactly that. If I could just climb directly up the mountain, I'd do that every time. When I can't, that's when I run around it to try to find a less steep slope, and in the process discover...whatever. Or maybe there's no other way and I mark that to come back to later when I'm more capable.

Fun tends not to come from being able to do anything but from testing the boundaries of the limitations.

The topics derail into the same discussions whether or not I contribute to them so I don't think this is solely a "me" issue here but I apologize if you took my facetious jab personally

It's meant to make you figure out ways to get around your limitations, especially at the beginning when everything is at its base level. If you could always just climb and swim endlessly, then it removes some of the significance of exploration.

Like yeah, as you expand your stamina, those limitations largely go away, but that's a reward for being thorough with said exploration, not an argument that stamina is a bad concept in the first place.

I never see anyone else talk about it
I do all the time, especially mentioning you can farm infinite stamina fish which lets you climb anywhere you want if you're willing to grind. So it really is a tedium gate more than a creativity or ability gate.

And even if it WAS an ability gate, that's not good for the structure of the game. There's 100 hours of gameplay without retreading steps. Are you expected to do that 100 hours a second time after getting your stamina bar to max, since you can now access even more places? I can never accept that kind of proposition from a game.

It's a tedium gate if you're determined to break the game as early as possible. It's weird to me that you chose to play the game in a way you repeatedly state is unfun simply because the game allowed you to do it.

Its crazy to me people defend the stamina in a game they also praise for loving the exploration of when a stamina meter just constantly gets in the way of that. Most of the detours youll see are nothing or Korok seeds. BotW still wouldnt be a good game without a stamina system, but it sure wouldve made getting around less annoying. Still not as awful as slippery climbing while raining though

It's by far the most fun way to play. I'm not going to spend dozens of hours building stamina just to come back and go up a random mountain. It's fun to be able to go where you want when you want. You'll notice BOTW fans say they love that about the game, but when I do it I'm wrong.
