Like we could grab our phone and play ten different versions of basically any song ever

but pre Napster you had to actually own the music to listen to it, or hope you heard the song you wanted to listen to on the radio or mtv.

I think people take music for granted sometimes because of how easy it is to get it. None of it feels as special anymore. You get to pick and choose which songs you listen to so people tend to not take in an entire album from start to finish. I think you lose a lot of what the artist was going for when you consume it that way.

obviously ease is a good thing, and choice is a good thing, but I do think there are some drawbacks that a lot of people are missing.

Yes. I recently have had thoughts about what it was like for people in the 1800s (and earlier). If they wanted to listen to music, they had to produce it live.

Oh yes the good ol days of putting two stereos up against each other while one records another

or waiting for the radio to finally play your song so you can hit record on your tape

I kinda miss the days of making my own mix tapes back in the 90s.

There was a weekly 2 hour punk radio show that aired on U of T's campus radio station and I lived close enough to be able to listen. I'd record the episodes onto tapes and then take songs I liked and dub it onto another tape and make my own mixes.

It was a lengthy process compared to making a mix on your computer or phone, but I enjoyed it. Listening to it in full when it was finally done was pretty satisfying.

Totally did that as a kid. But you're right, it was annoying to find a specific song. I just made a recording as I was listening, so all my tapes were random, unthemed, random song quality, and sometimes with the dj talking over the beginning.

In a way that's the cool shit.

It's like those old commercials they put on Youtube.

Back then when recording off TV people would try to cut commercials out.

But some didn't and now we can see old commercials.
