Lets say someone wants to do a Super Mario series playthrough and you have been tasked with telling them which games to play, and in which order.

What games and order do you tell them?

Lots of decisions for discussion here - which ports/remakes do you include (some of them have new content in the original game itself), do you include Yoshis Island but not Super Mario Land 3, Super Mario Maker games and Super Mario Run are considered part of the core series by Nintendo, etc.

When I do series run I like it being pure so original titles only where possible. I would be strict and not include World 2 or Land 3. Haven't played the Maker games but I guess if there's some single-player content you can include those.

well how would you play through the games then

SMB1, 2, 3, World & 64 are the essential console titles. Then I'd say do Mario Land 1 & 2.

Then Odyssey if you still need more Mario.

Getting a game over doesn't even make you restart the game, you can continue every world you're in. I don't think it's that bad overall. It does try to trick you sometimes, but the only thing trial and error couldn't solve for me is bowser castle shit. You need a guide for one of them.

playing as luigi is pretty sick too. Completely changes how you approach the level design.

This is what I would do, but I'd throw SM3DW and Sunshine in there. Sunshine not because it's particularly good, but because I've never beaten it.

What about the RPG games
Or are we just talking about the platformer games? (because if RPG counts that means every other side series like Golf and Marty counts as well)
But I feel like the RPG games are a must :|

The original "Wario Land" is subtitled "Super Mario Land 3"

Oh and 64DS is one of the most overbashed games I know of. I've played both it and the original 64 a couple of times over. They're semi-different games.

Honestly the Lands are really short and 3 of the 4 NSMB games are pretty excellent, would recommend those and Mario Maker 2

*I know it's technically a Donkey Kong game, but it's also super important to the evolution of the franchise and is short, so I'd say it's worth including.

**If you're only counting one version of SMB2, I would go USA. It adds more to the Mario mythos and is overall the better game, but if you want to include both that's up to you.

***As for the NSMB series, one handheld and one console game is more than enough for me, even though all four are technically mainline.

If I was trying to have someone play as much of the series' big moments as possible while buying as few games as possible:

Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World (or just an NSO SNES sub, finishing Lost Levels optional)
Super Mario 3D All-Stars
New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury
Super Mario Maker 2
Super Mario Odyssey

I think that would land you pretty much all the styles of Mario platforming other than the original two Land games, which could be picked up with the same NSO sub (along with the NES versions of the SMAS games). Everything else I think is a solid "if you want more of this type of game, there are options" like Galaxy 2, 64DS, the other three New Soup games (Wii I think has the strongest historical precedent with the Koopalings returning in that game and being the 2D series' return to console after almost 20 years), 3D Land, but I think that would encapsulate Mario's career pretty nicely and let you make an informed estimation on how you'd like pretty much any of his other platformers.

Yoshi's Island is just there if you want to play it, really. It's the most 'bonus' game, but it's about as much of a Mario platformer as Super Paper Mario is, so like. Figure that one out for yourself, too.

Mario Party 2, 3, or 4.
Paper Mario TTYD.
Mario Kart Super Circuit and MKDD.

You cant play every Mario game now because they took down the Mario battle royals for some reason rip

I would actually start with Donkey Kong too, it's really the first entry for both series. I would include Mario Bros. for sure though.
