I think the issue (partly) starts with the fact that most of that is terrible food. I don't mean in terms of taste, I mean in terms of nutritional value. Ideally it'd be donated off if it wasn't expired, but it's unhealthy to begin with.

My first thought was "Why are we even producing this much crap in the first place, can we not use the base materials for something better, or cut down production so the process of making this unwanted crap doesn't damage the environment?"

sued for what
The concern would be that a store knowingly donating food that I'd past its sell-by date would be liable if someone consumed that food and got ill. Thus opening the store up to a lawsuit. As far as I know this concept is a but legally contested, but most stores are going to roll the dice on it. Especially since nor donating food means they aren't having to deal with the logistics of donating giant quantities of food on a regular basis.

This isn't to say that food waste isn't a big problem, it is. Just that it isn't so simple as "donate the expired stuff".

In as litigious society as America, it's a liability. That's why it's pitched.

It amazes me how people fail to understand this every time this sort of thing shows up

The only reason that food existed to begin with.

But anyway most people (including store managers) are ignorant of the fact that it's not actually a legal liability to donate food, there's a law protecting that. It actually was passed under Trump IIRC. I'm not one of those "It's a distribution issue!" guys but it's still sad to see food go to the trash because of a misconception.

Not entirely true. They have bins for produce, meat, and my store has them for dirt, dead plants, and mulch. But it is true Walmart doesn't have a bin that bread would go in.

Yeah this.

But America is pretty fucking wasteful in general, and with real food produce not just processed refined stuff. Not to mention the very existence of the concept of "food fight" as a joke talk about privilege when there are starving people in Africa right now

A lot of companies do this with baked goods. Hell probably most. Starbucks included.
