Surveillance footage from a Walgreens in San Francisco shows the moment a private security guard killed a young transgender man accused of shoplifting.
The footage captures the guard tackling and punching Banko Brown, 24, on 27 April before fatally shooting him as he exited the store.
The video, as well as the announcement by the San Francisco district attorneys office it will not seek charges against the guard, is likely to reignite protests, which have popped up in San Francisco and spread through California since the killing, with activists demanding criminal prosecution and calling for increased investments in Black trans youth.
Brown was a budding community organizer known for helping Black transgender youth and had been struggling with homelessness in the weeks before his death.
The footage, released by the San Francisco district attorneys office on Monday and published by the San Francisco Chronicle, is taken from a distance inside the store and doesnt have sound.

My understanding is that Walgreens and most/all retail stores specifically train people NOT to do this. Hopefully this will cause them to reconsider having armed security guards in their store at all. I know there was another recent incident where a shoplifter (a pregnant woman) got shot by an overzealous Walgreens security guard. Not a good look for the store.

This guy should never have had a gun and probably shouldn't have had a security job in the first place. America has way too many people who literally have a "shoot first, ask questions later" mentality without regard for the consequences. Too many people see guns as toys instead of the very last resort they should see them as.

But no matter how sincere or repentant he might be (and that's very questionable considering that he apparently lied about Banko threatening to stab him,) needlessly taking a human life should have serious consequences and he should have had the book thrown at him... by refusing to charge him, the powers that be are just reinforcing the repugnant idea that trans lives and black lives have no value.

Theft means death is the motto of cowards. The US is supposed to not have the death penalty for stealing. So you prefer to celebrate the death of a person for petty theft.

Many might disagree with me on this, but I can understand finding personal property more important than another human's life, personally. There are memories and other esoteric interests there. There are attachments and emotional connections to certain personal property.

But store merchandise? What emotional connection has been formed with something that is only corporately owned? That's not personal property; that's corporate product.
