Board 8 > Man, what the fuck is happening at Marvel Comics? (Major spoilers)

I know there's less than a dozen comic readers on this board, but I still gotta get this out.

There are a few books I'm reading right now that are working for me. Ryan North's Fantastic Four, Rainbow Rowell's She-Hulk. Obviously Zdarsky Daredevil is solid but it's definitely not as good as it used to be.

But everything about the overall narrative just seems like a mess. Spiderman alone is in one of the worst states it's ever been in for the modern age.

And now, as was leaked just a couple hours ago, they're killing off Khamala Khan tomorrow. Who the fuck thought this was a move that would be well received??

It's just so wierd to me that Marvel can be such a household explosive brand, but their actual books are completely falling apart. There like a dozen ongoings and minis that sound like they're straight up fake, even as someone INTO comics with knowledge of how niche they can get. The fuck is "Gold Goblin"???

It's not like DC doesn't have some stinkers, but overall that brand is doing EXTREMELY well for itself in actual comics right now. The disparity between the public perception versus reality is just staggering, but I guess that just goes to show how astronomically more mainstream movies and TV are.

ok I looked up this Gold Goblin situation and uh what is going on

if Im understanding this right, a dude named Sin-Eater literally drained the evil from Norman Osborne, so now hes a hero

just sucked the evil juices right out of him

between this and the awful Mephisto plot line everyone hated why are Spider-Man and his associates having so much interaction with demons and shit

I am not a giant comics person bur this sounds terrible. Also it seems like the Spider-Man comics have had problem after problem in the comics for like a decade and a half.

Pretty sure a few months ago they said his love with MJ is purely platonic now and he is back with Black Cat. I don't really keep up with Spider-Man comics anymore, been shit for years now.

Just for one little taste, they recently revealed that Peter was gone for about a 4 year period while in a releationahip with MJ, she hooked up with some random and had 2 kids.

Except those 2 kids are almost 4 themselves, meaning she basically immediately got over him.

I don't even care about MJ, but that's just bad writing.

Also the spoiler tag in the first post is happening in that same Spiderman comic, of which that character has, as far as I am aware, not even been a part of it.

I think a lot of this may be connected to them forcing out 2 issues of a bunch of the Spiderman comics every single month? I feel like there's some publisher/editorial shenanigans that are really messing with the talent.

It's gotten so bad that Mark Waid went back to DC not that long ago. It's hard to express how bad that blood was! Yet here he is doing 3 or 4 ongoings all of which are fucking killing it.

Ironically it's ALSO a comic that spends several issue teasing you with "what did Reed Richards do to piss everyone off?", except it's not drawn out, the answer is satisfying, and it's contained in one singular comic run releasing at a normal monthly pace.

Paul GOATed comic book character of all time. What a complete boss. Give him the Spidey mantle. Peter Parker is cooked.

Also the Ms. Marvel stuff definitely seems studio mandated. She'll be getting revived by Krakoa and it will awaken her latent mutant genes and then she'll be MCU'd.

Don't conflate that with Marvel; Waid HATED Dan Didio, and Didio is gone.

As for the Kamala stuff, she's being rebooted as a mutant. Yes. They're taking some convoluted route to copy the MCU on this one.

Comics is one of those things I just never really got into, precisely because they are such a pain in the ass with having stories cross over all the time.

I've heard the Ultimate run of Spider-man was really good though because it avoided all/most of that shit. One day, I might get to that...

If you think about the rapid descent of the X-Titles' quality in the last 18 months, shipping her off to that side of Marvel is almost a death sentence.

And he just started Shazam.

He's also got a new Teen Titans series in the works (a seperate Teen Titans series just launched today from Tom Taylor, great first issue) as well a a Luthor book.

There are one shots scattered here and there as well.

Cannot express the devestation I felt when I caught up to Hickman X-men not knowing he'd gotten the boot.

I have attempted to reintegrate myself into the current content 4 times now and it's just IMPOSSIBLE. It is a SWAMP. You have to read like a dozen books and they treat them like they're all one book. How fucking you dare make an impenetrable Mister Sinsister event book??

I don't even particular love this run, but Joshua Williamson not too long ago finished an uninterrupted 105 issue run on The Flash.

Literally would NEVER happen at Marvel nowadays.

I have not read this yet, and I'm not a Spencer fan, but I HAVE to imagine it's better than this.

When I got back into Marvel a year ago I dove right into all the Chip Zdarsky and Tom Taylor Spiderman books, absolutely flabbergasted at how good those were, some of my favorite comic runs in years, but here we are.

Spiderman: Life Story?? A modern classic! Shit should be in a museum!

it's funny because I think zeb wells is a good writer. when he was part of the "brand new day" team, I thought he was told some of the better stories. he also did the brief hellions run a few years ago that I thought was decent. but yeah this last spider-man run seems almost purposefully bad, just like sins of sinister.

with the x-books, it's clear that hickman wanted to wrap it up but he did too good a job selling comics. Instead of the three act arc hickman set up, we got act one, a rushed act 1.5, and now a bunch of hacks who only kind of understood act one to begin with.

I have absolutely liked Zeb Wells books. His Lizard story for The Gauntlet, excellent. Adored his Hellions. His New Mutants, really solid. His Ant-Man? A criminally short 5 issue miniseries, stupendous!

But there's a lot of misses, too, and it seems like it's always when he's on an "important" book where he may not be making a lot of the decisions without the cold cruel grip of the higher ups guiding his pen. Something tells me Ant-Man didn't have a lot of editorial oversight.

Also I know he's an industry darling but boy I fucking can't stand JRJr's art, so that's not helping this run.

I liked JRjr's art during the 90s, but it got weaker and weaker over time.
