Former coworker F'd something up but quit before it ever came to light. GM was irate and wanted to know who it was. If the former coworker was still working here they would have just been fired and we would have moved on. We tell the GM who it was and that they don't work here anymore. GM was like "how convenient" and said someone right now has to be held accountable and we can't try and hide behind blaming it on the former coworker. Wut

This doesnt really mean anything without knowing what the something is. They could be right about somebody needing to be accountable for it now.

If they attempt to fire anyone that was not part of the issue that's a lawsuit waiting to happen. Immediately go to HR and report what is going on. Write a statement of when the issue occurred if you can remember, who was involved, and all dates pertinent to the issue including your recent conversation with the GM. Sign and date, get HR to sign and date and make a copy of it. Keep the original copy at your house or in a safety deposit box. Make sure you have a reliable 3rd party with you to witness the papers being signed. Get them to sign it as well.

If you get fired, take that paperwork to a lawyer. Since it has the signature of the HR department they can't weasel their way out of it not being delivered.

get some documentation together in case they try to retaliate, forming a timeline that clearly shows it was before your time. emails, contracts, and other agreements to support you because it sounds like your bosses are terrible

i had to do something similar when my work wanted to give me paperwork because our shop was overdue on a lot of FOIA cases, except they were way overdue when i started. leadership kept going on about the clock "resetting" when i started but i even got the FOIA instructors word that it doesn't, and even snippets in the regulations that show when the clock would stop (it also never resets)

TC is probably in an at will employment state. No prayer of a lawsuit. If some former fuckwit screwed your department and management fired you, you'd have zero recourse.

This is what we do in Indiana. We post on CE and hope we don't get fired.
