The really weird part is demonizing people for spending money on a service you don't want to spend money on.

There is no need to demonize people, but there are free alternatives to paying the fee that let you watch YouTube without ads that also let you not send google data which they use to profile you.

I'm referring to NewPipe (phone app), Invidious (website), and FreeTube (desktop app). There are other services which accomplish what these achieve as well.

As such, it doesn't make sense to me why people would opt for paying for YouTube Premium when free, more private alternatives exist.

The more people that buy YT Premium, the worse its gonna get.

They are gonna jack up the price and shove in more annoying ads that are longer and unskippable.

Wait until they start saying that you need to view 15 minutes of ads every hour, or if you get detected using adblock they nuke your google accounts.
