There was a semi-recent Booster Gold/Blue Beetle series that plays with this.

They set up a live streaming crowd funded superhero for hire kinda thing (where they ask for donations instead of asking for payment up front)

Tons of bad luck in the start that sees Kord kicked out of his company and both of them broke

And at the end after they save the world Batman goes to their apartment and gives them a bunch of startup money lol

your stuff and sell the merch. Seems like an easy win.
I think Watchmen did it right.

Obviously it's tougher if you have to keep a secret identity but you'd think there would be a universal fund for it. Though that would open up legal liabilities for the govt or whoever is funding them. . . etc, etc, . . . now we have metahuman registration. :\

They aren't really allowed to use their powers to benefit themsevles in any way. And when they do its generally portrayed as wrong.

Which applies to their wealthy friend's as well. Anything outside the bare necessity for fighting crime is usually off limits.

like, for gameplay purposes, yeah sure, totally get it whatever
but if the king has charged me with stopping The All Death from killing everyone in his kingdom, idk, maybe send a note to the fucking blacksmith to hook me up with the best shit instead of making me run around with basic iron gear that cost half my fucking retirement account to get because i didn't feel like tackling the starting area with a wooden sword and no armor

I think a baldurs gate game had the end game tower of doom by a town at the base and they still charged you. I get it from gameplay perspective but you are literally trying to save their doomed town from the death tower right next to them yet theyre charging you...

Meh.

Most of them were already super wealthy prior to becoming heroes. Even then ones like Tony and Bruce were kind of grandfathered in. So they get a pass.

Super geniuses though are actually pretty common. But I can't think of any that managed to make a profit off it.

Dunno if he sells any of them, but considering all the crazy stuff he's hoarding like dimensional transporters, space ships or etc...probably not?
