I'm hearing all these stories that kids now-a-days get away with doing whatever bullshit they want with little to no consequences. I guess my time and today is completely different.

When I was still in grade school, kids would be heavily punished for the smallest things too. Purposely late to class? You sit out of the class and you get a 0 for that day. Talking while the teacher is talking? Get a 0. Sleeping? Get a 0. Forgot your book? 0. If you yell back at the teacher you get the pink slip and you get suspended from school.

I don't think kids should be taught to yield unquestioningly to authority through the threat of severe consequences. That's how you make conservatives.

It change every generation.
My parents had teachers that could assault their students.
Pulling their ears, slapping their faces, pushing them against walls, etc.
...and in most of the cases, it was needed. They could be savages if the teacher was "too nice".
Heck, my father never got a grade in English because he thought his teacher was too nice. She even begged him to at least show up in class so she could give him a grade, but he didnt care.

I'm told it's because the school is afraid of being sued? That's crazy.

I got paddled by my principal. They had the guidance counselor there to make sure it didn't get "out of hand". Needless to say, it did.

I don't know how long ago some posters are talking about, but... at least in the US, we have laws against teachers physically punishing / restraining /removing students.

Which is also why we see incidences of "school police officers 'arresting' kids in classrooms," because that's the only legal way for teachers to restrain/remove students.

I dunno.
I think the trade is worth it in terms of reducing the potential harm to the overall student population, but maybe some interaction (say, physical removal) should be allowed to prevent trauma to the affected students.

I mean, yeah, we got those kind of laws as well, but this must have been before 1976.
