I worked in a cubicle and got noise cancelling earbuds about a decade ago and they were worthless, so I got noise-cancelling headphones and they worked great.

Perhaps noise-cancelling headphones have improved in the last decade, maybe I got a bad brand? Either way, I vouch for Sony noise cancelling headphones. The style was ZX110NC and they are still less than $50 bucks.

Of course. Getting a proper seal is EXTERMELY important for noise cancelling, and earbuds as far as they come still pale in comparison by that reason.

From experience, the Sony WF1000XM3 earbuds do an excellent job if you want to block out noise. The XM4s are going to be even better given their foam eartips, being able to block out noise more effectively. You should be fine using them for most situations where you might want noise cancelling.

Ive used the over-ear XM3 and XM4 from Sony as well as the Sennheiser Momentum 4s - the noise cancellation in the XM3 earbuds was sufficient enough that I did not miss the noise cancelling of the big headphones.

That being said if you want TOTAL silence (or as near as you can get since I know someone will nitpick), Id advise getting the headphones.

Unhesitant recommendation, they're great on every front.

Only real downside is I can't use them Bluetooth with my XSX controller but that would probably be tough on battery life anyway.

Custom iems prob the most effective at blocking outside noise. Provides Deeper insertion than regular earbuds and the shape of the nozzle and shell will fit perfectly into the ear . So they provide a 100% seal . You can see some artists wear them while on stage at concerts . I remember seeing a pic of Ariana Grande wearing a pair of custom iems that look similar to the 64audio U12T

Then there are the universal iems which are still great at blocking out noise. I find the deeper inserting ones to be at least on par with my wh1000xm3 (noise canceling over ear headphone). Ofc I don't find universal iems to be as comfortable to wear as a lightweight headphone. my ear canal actually feels a bit sore after using them for 3+ hours and I use small sized tips (I've tried silicone and the foamies).
