This is something I'm considering (hence the $1179 Lectric one), that instead of getting a top-end one now I may be better served getting a beater for a couple years and then see where the ebike market is at then. I'm fairly ignorant about the tech aspect, but my impression as an outsider is that the market is still pretty young and improving rapidly. If I get a really expensive one (like that $4800 Gazelle) designed to last, will it even still be considered a good bike in like 5-10 years? Or would it be something that I'd be looking to upgrade in a few years, and thus a waste of money?

Im not a big fan of step through bikes. The first seems similar to my Radmini, i did change the tires from knobbies to road tires. I also changed the crankshaft to more teeth to get a higher top speed and the pedals, the stock ones were cheap plastic.

I would go with either the first link or the 3rd link commuter.

I also have an Emove Roadrunner which is a lot of fun to zip around with.

Troll woot.com for cheap ones.
If you're mostly in an urban setting, consider a folding bike.

Super expensive. I'd really rather not pay $3k+ for a bike, but driving stresses me out. I like having a car and license for convenience, but if possible I'd definitely prefer to ride. And since I only live 2 1/2 miles away from work, there ought to be ample opportunities. I'm not so good at making ... well, anything.

I don't think I've ever ridden a step-through. All the (regular, not electric) bikes I've had have been step-over. It's something I haven't thought about, but from what I gather step-overs are considered better for hilly riding? If that's the case that might be something I need to consider, there's a lot of elevation change where I live (literally 2/3 of a mile up a hill).

I understand the not wanting a car payment for such a short commute. One of my coworkers found a Vespa for $800. It gets about 40m a gallon and ofcourse is super cheap to fill.

I don't know much about the current market othe4 than everything is way overpriced, wish you luck.

This.

Though I'd recommend getting a roadbike with e assist.

Probably the Aventon or Gazelle one. You don't want fat tires on a bike, as you'll be dependent on the electric motor just to pedal it. (Fat tired e-bikes are impossible to pedal without an e-assist.)

Have you considered a higher end e-scooter?

Ain't cheap either, but it's got plenty of power and capacity.
