Breathe the Black
Blue Whitecaps
RGB (OST Arrange ver.)

I'm really enjoying the calm, slightly somber melody that Breathe the Black produces. The guitar just gives me this atmospheric enough vibe that I can get lost in while having some direction in where it's going, and I certainly like the direction it's leading me to.

While I do like Dark Disquiet, I can't say I enjoy it nearly as much as I do for the softer ballads from Poets of the Fall, like Poet and the Muse and Late Goodbye. It's still nice though, I'm liking the sort of pop-punk feel I get from this song.

Happy and playful music coming from Yoko Kanno can never go wrong, can it? I just love the beginning with the piano and violin, and I can't help but think that a couple of parts sound straight from a 90s advertisement while a synth in particular gives a strong Mario Galaxy feel to it; this song just hits me in the right spots and I can't help but swoon over it.

Fire! sounds straight out of an arcade, true to its game name. I really wish the melody did more than loop constantly and use the TMNT motif, but it's energetic enough to get into the sense of fighting off danger as a mutant turtle, I suppose.

Is LOSTCOLORS an RPG? Because RGB sounds exactly like a really good jungle/forest theme that would belong in an RPG, I really like the instruments in it and the weird synths spread throughout. It's a pretty groovy track for me, this was a welcome surprise!

Deep Blue is interesting in that it keeps its somber tone as its core and works in some breakbeat and even some sweet sax into it, and it doesn't sound off-putting in any way to me. I'm not sure if the core could somehow be livelier to make it more interesting to me, but perhaps it doesn't have to be to sound this good.

My Dark Disquiet
Fire! (1st. BGM)
Deep Blue

tough day choosing

Where the Water Tastes Like Wine - Breathe the Black -7 -A deftly woven western song with dark brooding undertones that lure you in with its convincing melody

Control - My Dark Disquiet -8 - At first I thought this was gonna be another cheesy rock song, but the drum and backing instrumentation really elevated this to another level. I like how the chorus comes together and rhymes to push the energy of the song to the stratosphere. It works because the main level of the song is pretty quiet and lowdown, only getting intense for those pivotal moments.

Nobunagas Ambition: Haouden - Blue Whitecaps - 7- Man nobungas ambition really has the best music. This makes me think of a jazzy saxophone that has just wandered off on its own solo adventure in the wild west

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Arcade) - Fire! (1st. BGM) - 7.5 -Old arcade music had such a vibrant charm and punchy sound that seems missing from todays work. I love how vibrant and compact it is as well

LOSTCOLORS - RGB (OST Arrange ver.) - 6- Whenever i see this tiny triangle on screen I know Im in for some weird vibes. I always psych myself thinking its gonna be the chillest thrillest music and it usually lets me down, but the sounds are immaculate. The alien synthy stuff gets real groovy in the second half, which I really enjoy

ULTRAKILL - Deep Blue - 7- Theres only a few choice spots of this song, such as at 1:48 when the lower, echoey part sneaks in like a futuristic timbre of coolness. The main amen break stuff isnt my thing, but it provides a solid foundation for the experimentation and different sounds to come in

Control - My Dark Disquiet
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Arcade) - Fire! (1st. BGM)
ULTRAKILL - Deep Blue

MATCH 1

I liked the vocal Where the Water Tastes Like Wine songs like White Rider the most when I went through the nominations. Breathe the Black is a decent instrumental song. I like it the most starting at 2:17 and peaking at around the 2:30 mark. A common theme that I've noticed popping up in my writeups, it's a climactic moment of the song that I enjoyed a little more than the rest of the song.

I've enjoyed all of the Poets of the Fall songs that have showed up in this contest over the years since I participated. This is a little less metal than some of the other songs, but as a metal fan, I definitely enjoy stuff like My Dark Disquiet. Since their songs seem to have a good track record of making it into the contest, I wonder if I should try Children of the Elder God next year... It's a somewhat recent discovery for me that's definitely my favorite from this band that I've listened to so far.

MATCH 2

There are things that I really like about Blue Whitecaps and other things that weren't really a hit with me. That brief moment from 0:08 to 0:16 before the viola (cello? Not entirely sure) and a little bit of the guitar comes in is really nice. I'm not really feeling the viola here for some reason, though, but the piano comes in for a bit at least. 0:43 is also really nice. The rest, however, isn't really all that remarkable to me.
