How did they manage it? They legit made the sequel better than the original, and I felt like the original was near perfect. The Spider-Gwen stuff is absolutely beautiful, like a Robbi Rodriguez cover made animated. At least in palate and tone, if not as much in style. I don't really want to talk story, but I liked it too. But damn, the artwork is on another level. Every. single. moment. Even with all of the clashing styles, it still works. The visuals are just crushingly beautiful.
Apparently massive crunch for many years in a row

So when I saw it in theaters I knew going in it was going to be a 2-parter, and I thought it was pretty commonly known. But then most of the people sitting around me (including the person I was with) were all shocked that it landed on a cliffhanger. When it was first announced it was titled Across the Spider-Verse Part 1 before they changed the name of the third to Beyond the Spider-Verse.

Saw it today. I was pretty annoyed as I was unaware it was going to end so abruptly

Having said that its the first comic book movie I would ever consider Art. I do wish they could have rearranged some of the plot to make it so sudden though. Even infinity war was less of a cliff hanger

Funny, I think the first movie I ever saw that ended with "to be continued" type of ending came out in the 80s. Oh no, delayed gratification! How horrible.

The movie has been out for over a week so I'm going to dispense with the ending spoiler tags as the "secret" is out, but for real...

Even those of you that knew beforehand it was announced as a two-parter can you really say that you expected it to abruptly end RIGHT THERE- at the literal climax after all that build-up leading into a non-conclusion because the film squandered so much time setting up for Beyond the Spider-Verse that Across the Spider-Verse feels incomplete?

I have absolutely no qualms with a To Be Continued... type ending, I thought that was brilliant and very comic book inspired. My issue was with the pacing and the WAY it led to that "conclusion". The thing about Infinity War's ending vs. Across the Spider-Verse's is that, though they are both clearly leading to some continuation, one of them feels a lot more conclusive than the other. Think about it: Infinity War ends with the villain winning after a huge confrontation with the heroes. Half of the heroes have been obliterated and the rest are left there to quietly contemplate their loss. It really feels like "the end" even though it's not. Across ends with the hero captured and his friends about to go on a rescue mission. No final confrontation, no pay off, no resolution, no NOTHING, but hype for the creators to come take your money again in March of next year.

... And I'm all for that, I will literally fling my wallet at a movie screen to see how this trilogy will conclude, but I can totally see why people would be upset with the ending, ESPECIALLY if they didn't have any idea it would end the way it did. If you didn't like the journey then there might be something wrong with you fundamentally as a person, but the destination is just a BIT bogus if you ask me.

I don't think it's actually a good cliff hanger. Compared to Empire Strikes Back and Infinity War, and even something like Back to the Future 2, the stakes just don't feel very high. It honestly would've worked better if Miles was just "lost in the multiverse." But no, we know exactly where he is, and while Alt-Miles Prowler (aka Tails) is neat, all Miles has to do is venom blast his way out of there. No one's in actual danger really, and there's no big mystery to figure out. I'm not super excited about the next movie because I feel like I have a good idea what's going to happen next, unlike those earlier movies.

Yeah there are a lot of ongoing story lines

The biggest problem is I have no idea how you ramp into that without just throwing you directly into mid movie. Feels like the pacing is going to be tough

I knew this was a part one of two and I seriously expected the movie to end like, five times. There were so many scenes it COULD have ended on but it just kept going. That's maybe my only real complaint, it felt like a complete movie after the big confrontation and then there's like 20-30 minutes of even more stuff lol.

It's fine though, I think it's a good cliffhanger just because I'd like to see what happens next. I don't necessarily need danger or a mystery - something remarkable about this movie is that the second trailer basically gave away the entire movie in broad strokes, minus the reveal at the end, and still the character writing and visual direction was strong enough to make it feel completely fresh. That makes me feel extremely confident that the next part will be similarly tight even if it's pretty by the book.

If anyone saw the new Dune movie, that one was waaaaay worse about not feeling complete (and yet was still a pretty good movie), and in that case NO ONE fucking knew, they hadn't even confirmed the second part internally yet. So maybe I'm giving this one some extra slack.

And anyways I don't think it's going to be as simple as Miles blasting Prowler and getting out of there - the Sinister Six are being teased which should complicate things. Actually, my prediction for that is this is a universe where the "villains" are actually antiheroes (JJJ is complaining about the Six on TV and it's basically a given he's wrong) and they'll ultimately end up teaming with the Gwen-punk team to take down Spot and/or the Spider-Society. Provides a nice thematic counterbalance to the theme of canonicity too.

Even if I think this is the completely obvious swerve to go for, I really want to see where they go with things.

I think if you pretend that Gwen is the main character of this movie then there's a good conclusion to her arc with her dad.

But yes I went to the bathroom right when Miles gets pulled into Universe 42 because I legitimately thought there was an hour of the movie left. I felt pretty stupid when it ended 10 minutes later.

Miles also goes through a complete arc that just becomes immediately complicated because he's in the wrong universe. There is so much dedicated to his relationship with his parents, his family's fear of Miles leaving for college/Spider-Society (same thing), the villain literally tells him "you don't belong here" which leads to Miles confronting his fears directly and deciding to reveal being Spiderman to his mom. Miles has grown as a character, it just doesn't neatly resolve the plot. But so much of this movie is emotional stakes.

Saw it last night, absolutely loved it and even more than the first one. Animation is fuckin insane, and I enjoyed all the plot beats.

I did know going in that it was a Part 1 of 2 movies so the cliffhanger didn't phase me, if anything I think it was a super dope build-up and I'm excited for the finale. Didn't feel dragged on to me knowing that there was another movie coming, but even if I didn't I still would have enjoyed it. I dunno, even the setting up of points for the next movie was enthralling to me. Really loved every minute of it.

If I had any nitpicks, it would be that some of the one-liners were a little clunky and the movie maybe got a bit too self-referential at times but I can't even knock it on that because that's part of the whole point. I guess only other thing is that they kind of layed the whole "Peter has a baby and is a dad now" shtick kind of thick and it sort of reduced his character a bit, but it wasn't the worst.

Just finished watching this movie, blew me away. The scale of everything was just ridiculous, the number of characters, the number of art styles, all of the references. What a visual treat.

I didn't immediately remember that the movie was split into two parts so the cliffhanger got me for a bit. Really looking forward to the third movie.

Finally saw it just now, went in completely unspoiled which was cool. Realized a little before the end that this was clearly going to end in a cliffhanger and was a little bummed, but I'm fine with the conclusion having more time.

Really good but I still like the first one more.

I do think it's a better ending if they end it with Gwen and her dad and her leaving to go find Miles. Don't show any of Miles in universe 42. Let the movie start and end with Gwen and her Dad. I think that is a more satisfying conclusion to this movie and the universe 42 stuff would be a better start point for the next movie.

Because there's no post-credits stinger for this movie, it kind of feels like this was the "ending" and all the universe 42 stuff is like. A stinger reveal that got fleshed out into being part of the movie. Which is fine, actually. When I think about it, I'd much rather have all the stuff as a long reveal tacked on to the end than as a brief stinger with less character development or just thrown into trailers to hype the third movie.

Finally saw this.

I was also unhappy with the cliffhanger ending as well. Really wish they wrapped things up in some kind of story here.

The good thing is that this is a gorgeous visual spectacle and I could not stop being in awe of how it looked. Just a marvel of animation and I don't think most anything touches it. I could watch it so many times over for the visuals alone.

As a massive Spider-Man 2099 fan, I was extremely disappointed there weren't enough shock's and son of a glitch's thrown around. Kinda hoped he was a bit funnier, although he had some funny deadpan lines. And I don't really like the Lyla redesign? It feels too quirky.

Also a strange way to portray Ben Reilly too, but I dunno what else you do with him in this kind of setting.

Outstanding film though. Loved it.

By the way I know this is like the most minor thing to mention about this movie, but I noticed that the credits roll in this movie was unusually fast. On the one hand I appreciate that it doesn't linger for ages on the slow name crawl (especially when you're never sure if there'll be something after it or not), but on the other hand, especially with the whole story about all the crunch and the poor treatment of the people who worked on this, it makes me feel kind of bad, like 'oh we're just gonna get past all these silly names quickly, who cares about them.'

Did appreciate finding out quickly that there was no stinger at the end though.

My favourite part was Gwen's first action sequence because the animation style for her opponent looked so cool. I also really liked how his equipment was adapted to fit his universe.

I felt like the film flew by, so I thought maybe an hour had passed when the film ended, so when the To Be Continued message came up, I thought it was a joke, that Right Now would flash up and the film would continue, then when the credits started and I realised it was real, my jaw dropped and I had to stop myself from yelling "Say sike right now!" out loud.

Are there any particular spiders you'd like to see, no matter how likely? My pick would be Family Guy Spider-Man. He would swing by and save Miles at a crucial moment, say "Everbody gets one", and leave again.

Apparently they were in this movie? Maybe in the background. I didn't notice them though. And it doesn't count for me unless he uses his mecha to fight something.

Also, we were promised a reference to the glitch in PS4 Spidey where Miles turns into a brick would show up, but I didn't see it. Maybe the next film...
