I don't think I'll watch part two. It was so self-serious, yet also so goofy. Josh Brolin saying his random poetic quotables every now and then made me laugh. The super bombastic desert music was kinda cool the first time, but then they kept using it like it was exactly as cool the next few times.

The whole situation with the shields is just... funny. Very funny. Fast things get stopped, slow things don't. So there is that scene with the hilarious little assassination fly or whatever that's flying at a single mile per hour. Real fucking scary, I'm shaking in my boots.

Dave Bautista is just Drax with no jokes.

Visually, I'll say this movie is very, very cool. I loved several of the shots, especially when there was creative color and lighting involved. Massive props to the director, vfx crew, and cinematographer for that.

The story feels cliche, and I recognize that it's only cliche because the original book was written in the 60s, but that doesn't make it any less predictable, sadly.

I respect what it's doing, and I give serious props to the filmmakers for being so devoted to the story and characters. It takes a lot of restraint in this day and age not to fill a movie with quips, and I appreciate on some level that it treats war, religion, and politics with sincerity rarely seen in modern cinema.

But at the end of the day, despite some great shots, despite some good music, despite a couple of seriously cool action sequences and concepts... it was just kinda boring.

I enjoyed it though there is a lot of nothing going on all the time. Entire scenes that add nothing to storey progression or character development. Maybe it adds to the atmosphere, maybe they are just there as fan service to the old fans, maybe they are just trying to stretch it out. It could have been better, I'm stilling looking forward to the conclusion.

I think a lot of it is faithfulness to the book. I haven't read it myself, but a lot of the scenes feel like something that would work in a novel as a way of delivering exposition or establishing character, but in a movie it's just filler.

iirc, it's more that the book was really influential to other works.

That's what I meant by saying that. It feels cliche because other works borrowed ideas from the original. It's not the story's fault, unless you want to blame it for being too original and influential in its day.

I am really excited for part 2. The one thing part one didnt use enough was the House Atriedes theme.

Go find the Dune Sketchbook soundtrack and check it out. That song really needs to be a national (planetary) anthem. Hans Zimmer is a genius!

Yeah it was boring as hell. Slow pacing is fine in a movie that has good dialogue, but, well...

I watched it in three different sittings of about 45 minutes each with my gf, and I think I liked it more than she did lol.

The only thing she liked were the like, one or two minutes worth of scenes that involved the giant sand worms. Those were really cool.

Maybe if there's more worm action in the second part we'll end up watching it after all.

I think there is. I once saw part of or maybe all of an old like 80s version of the story . But I am pretty sure the worms become more important in the 2nd half of the story. Never read the book but I loosely have an idea of what happens

That's probably true, but like...it being from the book doesn't make me like it lol. Not knocking it for anything it did wrong, necessarily, it's just not really something I enjoyed about it.

I will say that looking at it as a half, Rabban is probably worse off, but that's because his tyrannical presence on Arrakis and his personality of being a stupid brute is just part of a long term political game that Baron Harkonnen is attempting to pull, the fruits of which are only seen or seriously discussed in the second half of the book. Not saying that he would be drastically improved with this upcoming film, but additional info helps a tad.
