A thunderstorm just started here and my dog is frantically running around the apartment losing her shit. Are there wolves in the woods barking at the sky right now?

My middle-aged cat hates storms and hides behind the toilet while they're happening.

My kitten gives no fucks and continues playing like nothing's going on.

Its loud. They dont know what is causing it. And the fact that their hearing is much better than ours probably makes it that much more intimidating to them.

My 5 month old basset hound doesn't seem to care. The one I had before him never had a problem with storms either.

It's probably because they can tell the range its coming from or the scale of the noise.

Heck loud fireworks used to scare my younger brother when he was a kid. And dogs have mental intelligence of like human kids.

It's loud, sounds like calamity, and they don't know where it's coming from.

My two cats respond to it exactly opposite of each other. One hides out in the basement, and the other will just sit in the window and watch the storm.

This. They don't understand. Most animals are like that. When my local town would set off fireworks I would have to lock my horses up and watch for young calves running through fences

Im more concerned about grown-ass adults who are scared of thunder. Like, I get if youre sensitive to loud noise, its definitely bothersome.

But these people who are afraid of thunder like its something that can actually hurt them? Come on lol.

I've had two female dogs who were terrified by storms and two male dogs who were unfazed by them. I don't know if there's any correlation between gender and storm tolerance. That's just the way it was with the dogs we've had.

Today is the birthday of one of them, but she's gone now. I miss her. :(

People do the same when they don't know wtf it is. It's been a useful survival tactic until people started to make big booms...even then big booms from people are often good to run from

I will say this, there was one time my dog was staring down a storm cloud and I think she earnestly expected the thing that was making noise to pop out of the storm clouds.

There's a military base ten miles from where we lived and B-12s (or similarly sized planes) would sometimes fly overhead. Maybe she thought those were making the storm noises. It's not like I could ask her.

Dogs have personalities. Some fear thunder, some don't. Just like people who might have a fear another doesn't share. It just depends on personality.

I miss my dog too. He would freak out at thunderstorms. Passed two years ago. Miss the big, dumb lug.
