has there been any serious discussion to a rework of the saving requirements due to the increased popularity of this contest? Something to extend the rounds a bit. I mean, I'm the sure the quick rounds are great from a hosting perspective but it feels like the contest has been shortened by about an hour of saving from where it was 5 or 6 years ago.

It sucks when there are sub-2 hour rounds but after the next couple of days & FoG rounds, everything from Days 21 through 95 run over 2 hours other than a few potential days in the high 40s. I remember 2 years ago lefty teasing us about a potential change to 3 saves at Day 41 instead of Day 51 but it didn't happen, I think that would be a great change to make, or even at Day 46 instead if it was too many total saves to implement at Day 41.

I think changing these 2/2 rounds to be 1/2 instead would also help with the breathing room though that might generate 4 hours rounds, but better that than going FoG for the first 10 days too.

FoG rounds are a staple of the contest that I hope no host changes.

also FoG is super scary yet fun, its basically 2/2 except you have to really care about the characters to use on each save

Yep, this is the first time I've participated in a non-final since I stopped hosting.

And FFD also seems to be around full-time instead of a late game drop-in too, the gang's all here. Well, not all I guess, we're missing the originator... you guys have been around for a while, did raytan ever pop in and/or participate after FFD took over?

Also makes me think how there's a couple of new people I noticed participating since last year but I wonder how many regulars have dropped off since those pandemic peaks. I was thinking of Shaduln with my Garland save today! Need to check the stats site to see who's a no-show this year so far I guess.

Are the start times announced of board somewhere for each round? Sometimes, with the random (to me at least) start times I am very surprised to see like 20 people save in the first five minutes of the topic post.

Some use discord and others just live on b8 24/7

A ping notification gets sent to everyone who has access to the SMFFFC channel in the B8 Discord.

There's a discord ping that goes out within a few mins of a new round, just join b8discord and type '$rank smfffc' in any channel if you want to be a part of it!

the response time, even with ping notifications, is still impressive. Do you all shower with your cell phones or something?

I was making something in the kitchen today when I heard the ping from my laptop, so I quickly ran to make my save and then went back.

thx for the raytan confirmation. I realized I never read the XIV nominations topic so I was also reading through that, January 13 2012. Over 11 years and some things never change... though it definitely comes across as a more fun and carefree time, though I guess everyone hadn't been repeatedly put through the wringer by that point.

Yeah, I won't be going all out like I have in the past. I'm just here to have fun. I work a job where I can keep an eye on the board throughout the day, so I should be able to catch most rounds, but if I miss a round here or there, no big deal. I'm also not going to be obsessively checking to make sure I save every hour on the hour to maximize my saves.

After creating an account you can look at the stickied topic for the Board 8 Discord server.

Or simply go here: https://discord.me/board8

Click on Join Server, go through all the usual verification stuff they may have you go through to make sure you're not a bot, and you should be able to join right in.

Then type in "$rank smfffc" (without quotes) in any channel (typically stats-and-bots) and you're good to go.
