Personally, I'm over the whole villain had noble goals, still thinks he's a good guy, lost his way thing. It's boring.
Works on the first playthrough sure, but what am I supposed to do on the replay? Pretend to hate him for 2/3 of the story again? Even though I know it'll be revealed he's not as bad as you initially think he is? Or if I'm really unlucky, even though I know he'll be redeemed later on?

I enjoy villains with shallow/petty motives. Underhanded, arrogant, maybe even cowardly, all that stuff. While law of diminishing returns is in effect, I like that each time you do a lap of the game you can relive some of the catharsis of finally defeating them.
I also like it when the fight is really challenging. Makes it easy to treat them like a threat if they actually are in the gameplay.

I have no idea which kinds of villains are popular nowadays. New games show up, have very little staying power then vanish sooner than later.

I prefer the femme fatale.

We don't get too many of those. The one that I can think of off-hand is Venus from Pokemon Colosseum.

She had to compete with Miror B in that game and that means second place at best, but she was still a cool idea.
I don't think she was meant to be that kind of seductress though, she was a TV star brainwashing the masses in accordance with Cipher's will. If that game had backstories, hers could have been interesting.

Boosted by a captive audience thanks to a pandemic. People seem to like messing with the concept a lot more than the actual character. In the real thing she has the GRRR IM REEEAL ANGRYYY voice, no memorable dialogue and no gameplay worth remembering.
I don't think femme fatale is the descriptor here.

She's a L4D special infected with big claws and some minions.
Apart from blood drinking I don't think she makes a move on the protag.
And how is that a subgenre? People will yell that whenever they see a female character tall or angry enough, irrespective of her allegiance to good or evil.
I don't follow.

Isn't that the same thing repeatedly though? Maybe it'd be fun if they affected the characters or caused the game world to distort in some creative ways but beyond that I don't get it.

I played the second example recently. Seeing all the scenes where it takes place while my character wasn't around almost felt like some kind of slapstick. It was pretty good fun figuring out what the big scheme was, trying to act in accordance or defiance of it in future playthroughs. Had a long, fun conversation about the character with someone after I was finished too.

Because she is 100% a femme fatale, but sometimes you might call her a dommy mommy.

Okay if you really want it to count then fine, sure. Not convinced though. To me, that sounds like the way people talk up no-substance gacha game characters.

What does this mean? You hear this a lot but it's always kind of vague.
Is this like that wrestling thing where you appreciate a heel's performance so you boo in accordance even though you don't actually despise them? Like your character is furiously chasing him for revenge but you're just following along because you find him entertaining and want to see him more?

Pure evil and/or bat crazy.

I love stories that go off the rails like Urban Chaos. It starts out with having to deal gangs, kidnapings, but then the game goes off the rails and next thing the player knows the player is fighting a giant demon and a cult.

Oh I was taking it to mean a typical seductress type. And more conventionally attractive.
If you broaden it like that, a character that causes harm and whose canonical depiction you personally find attractive, it does count but it loses a lot of meaning.

It is more about coding, not about actually finding them attractive. Like, if someone took the hottest woman in the world to you, but stuck your dad's head on it they would be coded as attractive but you would absolutely not find them so. Similarly "conventionally attractive" is basically irrelevant. She is absolutely so, it's just how much you particularly are into her. Having claws is irrelevant, literally every aspect about her is a fetish fuel checklist beyond that point.

And I didn't find her attractive. Not really the point, though. I just am not so full of myself to believe that the Internet at large didn't.
