Messi does have past sponsorship deals with the Saudis, but the key thing here is that his wife didn't want to live in Saudi Arabia.

Messi is a franchise unto himself, having made over $1 billion in his career from player contracts and endorsements. Dude will probably make near as much for the remainder of his life just on his name and image alone. He will never want for money, so why play somewhere where's you're a veritable toy for an unrepentently murderous royal family? Is that money really worth that if you're Lionel fucking Messi, already the highest earning sportsman in the world?

My girlfriend and I were at a two days ago when the news of Messi joining the MLS was on every tv. Neither of know a single thing about , and care even less about soccer. We talked about how obviously impressive, famous, and rich dude has to be for both of us to even know his name

*The main discussion was how surprised we both were that his first name is Lionel.

messi is already worth hundreds of millions of dollars and is the goat of this generation. he will always be marketable and always be rich. he probably didn't think it was worth it to sell his soul and reputation for more money he could never spend. he already has generational wealth that his great grandkids should be rich off of

He already had more than enough deals with the Saudis to show that this is not about morals or "messy business".

It's most likely that he simply doesn't want to live there (with his family), and maybe because playing there would be a hit to his reputation.

Nonetheless, it shows that the Saudis can't buy everything and everyone, just by throwing even more money, and that's a nice thing.

Messi always seemed like a pretty normal guy to me. Definitely not the one who's selling himself for money. That's why most soccer fans in Europe love/respect him, even if they aren't Barcelona supporter. I'm sure that if Barca would have not needed to to sell him, he would have never left them.

Apple are prepared to offer Messi a share of the revenue generated by new subscribers to MLS Season Pass, the leagues streaming package on Apple TV+, according to the Athletic.

Adidas, meanwhile, are offering Messi a profit-sharing agreement with the sportswear giant which would involve the player receiving a cut of any increase in Adidas profits resulting from his involvement in MLS.

In another carrot to Messi, the 35-year-old may be granted the option to buy a stake in an MLS team when his career in the States ends. This is the same privilege afforded to David Beckham when he played for LA Galaxy.

This actually sounds more tempting than flat 1 Billion.

I'm aware of that (soccer fan since 1992), and I agree, that it looks hypocritical. Nevertheless, before had to leave Barcelona, rumours said that he offered to keep playing for them for free (or only for a small fee, don't remember it anymore). No one is saying, he is the holy pope, but there are reasons why most soccer fans like him.
