Curious to see what y'all think about this one. Should an obese person pay for 2 seats to fly?

https://www.cnn.com/travel/article/plus-size-travelers-slam-airline-seat-policies/index.html

I'm good with it. With the looming pilot shortage (https://www.cnn.com/2023/04/19/business/pilot-shortage-retirement-tsunami/index.html), I'm not sure we can afford to widen all the seats to accommodate obese while still flying all the people wanting to fly.

Its not a problem Ive ever encountered, but Ive not spent much time in the states, where Ive heard its more of an issue.

But yeah, if you take up more than one seat, it seems fair that you would pay for more than one seat. Thats what people have to do when they bring their kids, right?

I am of split minds about it.

1) Yes, fuck you, buy another seat
2) To be fair, airlines consistently reduce the amount of space available, over and over and over and over and over and over

You pay for a seat on a plane. You take up more than one seat, you should be required to pay for an extra seat.

No. What they ought to do is stop making the seats obnoxiously small and uncomfortable just so they can cram in as many ticket buyers (intentional phrasing, because they don't see us as people) as they can.

Any time you are thinking that a big company "can't afford" these sorts of things, I assure you they could. They just need to put a stop to the corporate big wigs at the top raking in far more $$ than they could ever conceivably need.

I really do sympathize with these people who have this problem and I admire them for advocating for themselves.

But "immutable?" That's just not true. I think that some, not all, people come to identify with their bodies as something that can't be changed. I can't fathom seeing as something as clearly linked to behavior as weight, so much so that it's visible, as something that can't be changed, and therefore the rest of the world has to accommodate it.

Sure, we can easily go down the road of evil capitalism here... but I'm more thinking about the standpoint of us needing to fill these planes to the max as the pilot shortage gets worse. Unless engineers figure out a way to make larger planes, more pilots start entering the workforce or other means of transportation come to fruition, people who travel a lot will feel the pinch (no pun intended).

I'd love to see some high speed rails taking some of the burden off flights but there's a lot that has to happen for that also.

And I also disagree with the obnoxiously small part. I'm obese by medical standards (5'8, 225lbs) and chubby by all standards and I fit comfortably in every plane I've been in. It's the people who make me look fit are the ones who struggling. And I've been on the receiving end of sitting next to someone who should bought two seats. Anyone who does that once will immediately agree with me - that was the worst flight I've ever been on.

As someone whose seat was encroached on by a person of size last time I flew, yes. Hell yes. Yes, but with a caveat: Airline seats should be a minimum of 19 inches wide. Seats are shrinking already, and giving carte blanche to airlines to charge extra based on passenger size and they will charge by the inch.

We already pay extra for overweight bags. Maybe that should be changed to threshold for total weight per passenger (bags + body, including clothes and carry-ons)?
Also: The woman in the article literally weighs more than my entire three-person family, so I think she's getting a deal only having to pay for two seats.

The economy seats suck in general for anyone over 6'3 because there's no legroom and our knees sometimes have to rub against the tray to avoid posturing like we have scoliosis so fatties crying over seats can get in line.

You must very lucky in the planes you've been on if that's your biggest complaint. I'm just an inch taller than you and the last plane I was on was the worst and it had nothing to do with weight as my knees were right up against the seat of the person in front of me... for two hours! It was excruciating. I can only imagine what a tall person goes through in such ridiculous seating.

you get around triple the leg and reclining space in the shinkansen vs a random economy class flight.

You're an inch or 2 taller than I am but I weigh almost a 100lbs less and still find economy class to be obnoxiously small.

Honestly I skimmed this yesterday expecting to be annoyed but their complaint seemed to be more that they're fine paying extra for another seat, but there's no consistency across the airlines with regard to the policy which can make choosing an airline difficult. It's pretty reasonable tbh.

2) To be fair, airlines consistently reduce the amount of space available, over and over and over and over and over and over
They tend to reduce space by placing the rows closer together, not by making seats narrower to fit in an extra one. Three seats per side on like a 737 is something that has been done for decades, so being too wide to fit in one seat isn't really the airlines fault. Either pay for a first class seat which is wider cause they are only two across or buy two seats.

Now if there is an airline that manages to somehow fit like a 4-3 seating in a 737 instead of the standard 3-3 then that would be all on the airline.

Probably doesn't help that instead of doing the sensible thing and making middle seats cheaper, airlines try to fill middle seats by not letting people pick out their seat. When you can't choose your seat, a fat person willing to buy an extra one is unable to do so.

Nope thats an greedy airline issue a lot of people overlook for the most part. The seats should be more spaced out and larger in general. Instead theyre small and made to cram as many seats in as possible. Then they price depending on the season and how close the flight is. The seat prices remain the same even if it means they wont fill every seat. People seem to be okay with this though.

Special circumstances for someone thats like 500lbs thats probably when they should pay for 2 seats.
