Lol, nope. Most places are already back and the mods remain the same. Reddit is not gonna change because a couple of subs have their mods swapped out. There's no indication they plan to just takeover the subs wholesale. Stop fearmongering.

You're forgetting the reason why there was a blackout in the first place. Almost every mod tools used API, statisticians used the API, pushshift for sites like unddit and redditsearch.io, the only places where you can look up topics within a timeframe since reddit itself doesn't go past page 10, used the API, many of the top contributors used Apollo. All of these are now gone and overall makes the site a worse place even if it doesn't directly affect you.

Hi everyone

We wanted to ensure that you are aware that the API update does not impact moderation bots or sitewide tools to control spam or remove harmful content. You can find more details in this article in our help center. You may have seen posts or received messages from users telling these tools are going away or are somehow impacted, but this is not the case.

We are also aware that some members of your mod team have expressed that they want to close your community indefinitely. We are reaching out to find out if this is the consensus reached by the mod team.

Subreddits exist for the benefit of the community of users who come to them for support and belonging and in the end, moderators are stewards of these spaces and in a position of trust. Your users rely on your community for information, support, entertainment, and finding connection with others who have similar interests. Ensuring that communities are able to remain stable and actively moderated is incredibly important to the people seeking out these spaces to make and foster connections.

If there are mods here who are willing to work towards reopening this community, we are willing to work with you to process a Top Mod Removal request or reorder the mod team to achieve this goal if mods higher up the list are hindering reopening. We would handle this request and any retaliation attempts here in this modmail chain immediately.

Our goal is to work with the existing mod team to find a path forward and make sure your subreddit is made available for the community which makes its home here. If you are not able or willing to reopen and maintain the community, please let us know.

Most of those are not gone. This was clarified by Reddit before the blackout. The API is pretty much only targeting large scale 3rd party Reddit apps that are monetized, which Reddit pays millions a year to support through hosting, server, and maintenance costs. It's not free. These apps also either block ads, serve their own, or have subscriptions.

Reddit doesn't really make money. They'll just continue bleeding money till they die, unless they either monetize the users even more, or monetize 3rd party apps, while also getting rid of basically dead weight competition they're giving charity to.

Is pushshift/camas.unddit still going to continue functioning? The funny thing is that reddit themselves have used pushshift data to show things like what percentage of users get modded, what percent of users upload etc.

You're talking about reddit mods getting replaced, which didn't happen since subs reopened. I'm talking about the CEO wanting to follow Musk's lead on Twitter, which has become a cesspool. What exactly they plan on emulating from Twitter remains to be seen, but considering most of what you see on Twitter now in the replies is blue checkmarks with the worst takes you can imagine, things probably don't look good for reddit

So unsubstantiated speculation?

All that spez said was he talked to Elon on how to cut costs and become profitable.

That is literally what they're trying to do right now by trying to remove dead weight. They're basically providing charity and people are mad they're stopping.

I know you're smarter than this and know that there's zero evidence that it's gonna turn into whatever you're fearmongering about.

Do you think this is a court of law or an academic setting or something? Of course it's speculation. Most of the shit that's talked about here is speculation. What we do know is that Musk's idea of making Twitter profitable was massive layoffs in an attempt to reduce overhead, leaving Twitter with a drastically reduced dev team. That may look appealing in the short term to investors, but its not sustainable long term for a tech giant platform

"He talked to Elon Musk" is not proof of anything.

Maybe if he said "I'm gonna follow in Twitter's footsteps from now on", the Qanon level reaching wouldn't look so bad, but you're delving in conspiracy levels of BS here.

Twitter has paid workers for everything. Reddit has made zero indication they are doing anything to their paid workers. The fact is that supporting these 3rd party companies are costing them millions a year. That is the absolute obvious place for any company to cut out first.

Get back to me when it actually turns into a Twitter like cesspool. Like, what do you even think is gonna happen when most subs are back and mods are on board? Are they gonna do secret infiltrations of the thousands of mods that are back, so they can what? Takeover the sub?

Do you hear yourself? Straight up fearmongering.

It gets worse: some subs are only letting people post if they are subbed via Patreon (i.e. paying to post).

https://www.reddit.com/r/gameverifying/comments/14bu3b3/we_shall_remain_restricted_for_the_time_being/

Kind of impressive how blatant the mods are about making this protest all about them.

Many 3rd party app developers have really nothing against Reddit starting to charge for API access, the problem is that Reddit overcharges it to the extreme. One app would have to pay $20 million per year.
