To be fair, the Nintendo guy did say that those who played jrpgs were basement dwelling losers*. Guess we'll never know which one is worse.

9 minutes? Were they for real back then?

Suddenly it makes sense why Nintendo 64 was only popular in America and barely got a foothold in the rest of the world compared to ps1.

Oh god, I remember the kidnapping/interview one when my cousin first got it. We watched it, and even then it was a bit weird.

When NEC released the the Turbo Duo, a hybrid of the Turbografx-16 console and its add-on, the TurboGrafx CD, they also created the superhero Johnny Turbo for their ads, where he saved children from being tricked by evil Sega in some comic strips.
...they never mentioned Sega by name, but it was clearly Sega...

In the first one, we see a toystore filled with children. They stand in line and are waiting for the new CD-based Sega console.
A Sega agent, dressed in a black costume and a black hat, gives the first kid in line, a girl, a box with the new Sega console.
So you are exciting for this new CD-based console, little girl?
She is.
Good, good... too bad that you are a fool!!! In order to use it, you must also buy our more expensive old console, otherwise it wont work!!! And since no game is included, you must buy one as well!!!
Mwahahahahaha!!!
The girl starts to cry. The rest of the line are sad. They got here for a CD-based console and it is impossible for them to leave without one, even if they are forced to buy another console and a game in order to use it.
Then suddenly Johnny Turbo appears and saves them with the truth!
Hey kids, dont let Sega trick you!
Sega claims that their CD based console is the first, but it is a lie!
The Turbo Duo is the first CD console out of the box, no need to buy another console to play your games. And we bundle it with a game!
And Segas claims to have new games is a lie, their "new" Sherlock Holmes game was released on the Duo last year!!!
Dont be tricked, buy the Duo!!!
The children are happy again and buys the Turbo Duo, and the Sega agent sneaks away, cursing Johnny Turbo.
It is later revealed that Sega are run by evil aliens that tries to take over the world.

It was on a VHS they sent out to subscribers of their magazine at the time iirc.

The real reason why Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars never gotten a direct sequel.

That ad isnt saying Nintendo should be shot. It is saying FFVII and the future of disc games to come is a death sentence to non-disc games. Which was true as the next generation Nintendo console went with a somewhat disc format and the N64 could not compete with the PS1 because of discs.

That wasn't just an advertisement. They literally sent it out to you in the mail.

But that's the other thing, sending by mail? It is crazy how that used to be a thing not just in movies and shows. Mail not delivered Electronically

Ha. I had gotten that stuff from Nintendo Power from time to time. It was often very cheesy.

...then when that pre-rendered cut-scene ends, watch that PS1 struggle to render a few janky polygons with hard aliased edges at 10 FPS while the N64 renders smooth 3D environments at 30+ FPS.

It took the PS1 half an hour to load that cutscene. Cartridges were like SSDs, damn near instant

At the time, CDs were such an amazing improvement for music. The dominant format at the time was cassette tapes, which were awful in every conceivable way except for portability.

For gaming, the big advantage for discs was that they were cheaper to press and stored a lot of data.
