It's not a "huge problem" that people point to its huge sales record as a point of quality... One Piece isn't the only extremely long running series to exist, and even if it was, the long running nature and its staying power with fans is an explicit result of it's quality.

One Piece has succeeded at remaining engaging and in the zeitgeist for 25 years. Sure.... if you zoom in on smaller timelines, you see that it was eclipsed by other series. But every other series eventually buckles and folds, maybe sometimes because the author thought it was appropriate for the story or because they no longer wanted to continue, but lets be real - it has often been the case that long running shounens run out of steam and have significant drops in quality. One Piece's two brothers of its era, Naruto and Bleach, were certainly comparable to One Piece at their peaks... but they did not maintain themselves as solidly as One Piece does and ending was inevitable.

Maybe there is some footnote to be made that One Piece's record doesn't mean that every volume of One Piece has held the top selling slots every week since 1997, people like other series too.... but it's certainly not smoke and mirrors that doesn't mean anything

If you want to actually look at the numbers - here is the wikipedia chart showing the highest selling manga - One Piece is significantly above everything else, even when series have similar number of volumes, or still doubles other popular shounen that still have 70% of the number of volumes. The sales per volume of 4.97 mil kills almost all other competition, barely any other series come close, with only DBZ, Slam Dunk, and Demon Slayer beating it. While I certainly think DBZ could maintain sales with more volumes, I don't know that would be the case for Demon Slayer if it ran for longer.

All in all, it's a pretty solid record. I don't think your concerns are that valid.

I legitimately thought Kingdom would be on that list, my impression is that it's a juggernaut.

I mean literally the first response to the slightest suggestion of One Piece not being the best thing to ever exist was but popular tho so yeah its obviously an issue. This is something that has happened again and again in online spaces for like 20 years.

Like I said, One Piece is incredibly popular. That it maintained being so popular for so long is a huge achievement. However if were thinking raw popularity Dragon Ball and indeed Demon Slayer would top it, although is is hard to say if Demon Slayer will maintain cultural impact in the same way Dragon Ball did. Though given how long they seem to be dragging out the anime of a relatively short series, maybe!

Demon Slayer was outselling One Piece for quite a bit for a while there, it was a whole zeitgeist moment.

One Piece fans were SUPER PISSED and trying to find excuses left and right, lol. It was a wierd time.

Demon Slayer is unquestionably the highest seller per volume and has other trophies like the highest grossing anime movie of all time (also the first non-American movie to become the highest grossing movie of its year since 1915 which is nuts) and so on. It absolutely was topping One Piece.

Speaking of which, Demon Slayer is a great case study for how popularity isnt just down to the quality of the work. Now Demon Slayer is good but how many here would call the manga great? However, it is a series where literally everything went right in terms of popularity. Good series, extremely well produced anime, a movie that was a mainstream hit, all during a global surge in manga sales fuelled by the pandemic. Which all helped its popularity more than it just being great.

Something tells me the reporting on this one may not be completely above board.

Actually BOM is for whatever reason under-reporting Demon Slayer. Fairly significantly too, Demon Slayers final gross was $507m which is just absurd numbers for an anime film. So yeah Demon Slayer was the top 2020 film BOM just doesnt show it.

I miss when BOM was good.

As an avid one piece fan I never really understand either power scalers or people who are mad at things outselling it.

Demon slayer got super hype and it's relatively low volume and finished so it's an easy bulk buy. It's also really great (although severely rushed imo)

Anyway live action looks OK. I will enjoy it for what it is.

Oh well I was talking popularity poll kinda popularity.

Trailer is performing very, very well in terms of views. In just two days its already over a million views ahead of the Cowboy Bebop trailers lifetime view count. Looks like it might settle similar to the trailer for The Witcher season 3 or maybe even pass it. Assuming the show is even halfway decent itll probably be a big success as the demand is clearly there.

As someone who has never watched one piece and knows absolutely nothing about the plot, this looks like a pile of garbage.

I can't speak for all of us, but I don't think I've seen anyone that's "super pumped". Mostly what I've seen is "that doesn't look quite as bad as I expected"

Expectations aren't really high. Live action anime/manga adaptations have a poor track record and One Piece is not considered an easy work to translate to live action to begin with.

I was really pumped for Cowboy Bebop and thought it was stunningly beautiful it just had so many other issues. This doesn't even look that great and that worries me for the YuYu live action in production.

Yeah the most positive I've seen is "Zoro looks awesome and the rest looks like it could actually be good!"
