I have like $37k in debt from schooling that I was kind of forced into and did not take seriously, and so I got nothing out of it. I recently put most of my money in a CD because I wanted to take advantage the high interest rates. I thought with talks of the Federal Reserve slowing down on rate increases that it was a good time to lock in a decent CD rate. So now I don't really have the option to pay down my debt before interest kicks in lmao

You don't see why people would say that after decades of rich people being able to wipe away their debts and continually get preferential treatment via tax cuts and write-offs only for something to finally look like it will help out average people only for republicans to do everything in their power to rip it away for no other reason then that it would help democrats? I mean, it's plainly fucking obvious.

One of the few things keeping Biden popular with younger voters.

He needs to have some kind of backup ready because this is gonna anger millions of people.
He has one: it's called "convincing people that no matter how bad he is or how many promises he breaks the only realistic alternative must be kept out of power at all costs." It's been working really well so far.

a) So, go after that, too. I get that Republicans are evil hypocritical pieces of shit that will never do anything helpful for the country. But Democrats roll over and fucking play dead for the rich way too easily, too. They gave up on the IRS budget to go after rich tax cheats w/o much of a fight, and they haven't even tried to roll back Trump's tax cuts for the rich. If Dems made a platform out of clawing back PPP fraud, I'd support them 100%.

b) "The living room is on fire, so why not set the garage ablaze, too?" will never be a good argument, no matter how many times it is proposed.

PPP was designed to be forgiven with specific stipulations in the contract enabling them to be forgiven given certain actions were taken to keep employment up instead of immediate permanent layoffs.

There was not anywhere in a student loan contract even the possibility it might be forgiven at any point.

It's really simple. You enter a contract, you take out a loan, you pay it back.

I want to socialize education to a much greater extent to make it so future students don't need to take out these loans. But those who did....they need to pay what they agreed to owe.

You don't get to just take money from people, promise to pay them back, and then just expect to walk away without paying.

I paid mine off because it was the right thing to so.

Around 74,000, and that was after my scholarships.

I bartended nights all throughout law school just to pay down those loans. Missed every single football game in a college town that very much cares about their college football team. I even lied to my law school and said I was only working 20 hours a week because they had a policy that students couldn't work more than 20 hours per week while enrolled in classes. I knew I needed to work more than that to pay what I owed so I did. My grades suffered for it. I still finished above 50th percentile, but I can't help feel like I could've done so much more with more time.

I watched other classmates not work, go out, have fun, and get far more time to study for final exams. They kicked the can down the road because they were lazy. And people want to tell me that those people should get rewarded twice for choosing to neglect on their duties and not pay towards what they owed? Fuck that.

No. I don't. That's why I advocate for a more socialized education system. I don't want future students to have to take out loans like that. I think it's complete bullshit and is in direct contradiction with our country's own interests.

I hope by the time my (future) children get to college things are very different.

But for those of us who took out those loans? Those of us who knew the terms that were offered and agreed to them? Yes, we should have to pay them back. If you didn't want to pay that loan, you shouldn't have taken it.

I like the part where any time a reporter asks the Biden administration about paying back the responsible people that sacrificed to pay off their loans already, they just dodge the question or sheepishly are like, "yeah, maybe..."
Cause apparently the "immoral" system is ok when perpetrated on those that worked their asses off and put off travel and getting a house.

No one made anyone go to an expensive college. Community college. State universities. Various programs for scholarships or loan forgiveness for military service or government employment. The options were there all along.

The people who agreed to those terms were not "wronged". The choices that were offered to me (and them) were shitty, but nobody forced me to take that loan. I chose to take that loan. They chose to take that loan.

I had other choices. I could have gone to a trade school or no college at all.

In fact, I know many people from my high school who did just that. They couldn't afford college, and they figured they couldn't afford to pay back the student loans, so they took a completely different path and got jobs that would accept people with high school education. They took lower paying jobs and raises their families with the options they had because they didn't want to fail on paying a loan they knew they couldn't afford.

Now, here we are, 13 years later, and you want to tell them that "Aaaaaaaactually. Turns out the joke is on you guys! Haha! All those people who took out those loans you were responsible enough to avoid? Turns out they were all free! Your peers that are currently making 3x what you are for the last decade have just been given a free ride to boot! I'd honestly rather have no student debt "forgiveness" so those who didn't even go to college and statistically earn less than those who did don't get fucked over, than get the money.

If Biden wants to do a general "stimulus" hand-out where everyone under a certain income gets the money, to spend on student loans or whatever the fuck else they want, it'd be far more fair and beneficial to society than the student debt cancellation he's pushing.
I'd be ok w/ that, even if the income limits were so low that I didn't qualify for it (I easily was within the income limits for the pandemic stimulus, which is literally half the limit Biden had for the student debt cancellation). At least it'd be targeted at the poorest and going to the people who need the help the most. Married couples making a combined $200+K can fuck right off with these hand outs, and don't blame me for setting the income limits so high, that was all Biden.

No. Absolutely not. I take loans, even casual ones from friends, very seriously. If I owe someone money, I will pay them as soon as I can regardless of the effort. That's why I took it so seriously and worked so many hours those years.

If a friend spots me for an uber or a ticket or a dinner somewhere because I don't have my card, or it's more convenient to put it all on one tab, etc. I pay them back the instant I can through Venmo/paypal/cash.

When I had to finance my car, I paid extra every month just to pay it off as quickly as possible. I asked my boss for a bigger raise after my first year as an attorney and told him I'd cover for as many of his cases as possible because I wanted to pay down my car.

Now that I have a mortgage on a house finally, I'm doing something similar.

Like I said. It's simple. You borrow money from someone, you pay it back. It doesn't matter who you borrow money from or how lopsided the terms are. If you can't do it, don't agree to it.
