Cis is a shit word. It sounds rubbish. I'm not bothered by it or anything but I get why people are. I mean hetero is a similar kinda word in that it identifies what was long considered the societal norm, but there's zero (or none that I know of) objection to it because it doesn't sound rubbish. You'd think more people would be bothered by a word that people actually use outside of the internet.

The problem is, people don't know that cis is the opposite of trans so they think cis is a newly invented prefix made just for "normal" people which is why they feel attacked by it.

Tbh, Musk probably actually already knows this but he has an agenda to push here.

Yes, ignorance has often been the reason for bigotry. Doesn't make it any less bigoted, though.

I don't get it, what's bigoted about misunderstanding what "cis" means?

Unrelated to you and your comment lolife67, there's a profound irony that people will hate being called "cis" because it's a label they themselves didn't ascribe and they want other people to respect how they want to be called.

Nah, they know. They're told about it constantly; the only way they could claim not knowing by this point is with a willful "lalala I can't hear you" argument.

The issue is that they regard themselves as just "normal" and therefore feel like they don't need a descriptor at all. (The implication being that they view trans men/women as illegitimate/lesser compared to themselves, but are just too chicken shit to admit it outright.)

If we were talking about simply "misunderstanding" then that would be one thing. However, you have to couple that with the reaction and refusal to learn the actual meaning that's the problem. The bigotry comes from their reaction.

Not really comparable since one isn't done maliciously and their objection is based on ignorance.

What are you supposed to do if you dont wanna be called something. Doesnt matter the reason behind it, you just dont like it. But, if you say something about it people will just call you weak and fragile for saying something about. Theyll go through mental gymnastics to make it okay to laugh at you while being sympathetic to the ones they agree with when something similar happens to them.

Oh so now transphobes want to dictate what people call them and get offended by words? Facts don't care about your feelings. If I see you write with your right-hand, I will say you're right-handed, even if you have a meltdown because you think labels are only for minorities like the lefties.

Theres an example in the OP. Dude didnt wanna be called that and clearly people thought it was ridiculous and called him that anyway.

Happens to trans people any time someone calls them by their biological sex and then refuses to call them otherwise.

Happens in unrelated bullying scenarios in too many ways to list.

Gotcha. So you do believe that disliking "cis" based on nothing is the same as disliking being misgendered based on transphobia/bigotry.

I thought that was what you meant but wanted to make sure before I decided how ridiculous your claim was.

This is just so embarrassingly wrong and yet another example of transphobia and bigotry rearing its ugly head from sheer ignorance.

A woman who is trans and has medically transitioned is not, scientifically or medically, male.

Youre not tall enough to get on this ride.

Let me state this in plain English.

Just because you want to refer to someone who isn't trans as Cis, does not mean someone else wants to be referred to that way. Just because you have created a hundreds of pronouns, does not mean that I want a new pronoun assigned to me. It has absolutely nothing to do with marginalizing transgender people.

A cisgendered persons gender identity is whatever sex that they were born as. The VAST majority of people on this planet are that way, therefore, statistically, it is normal.
