Watched it for the first time recently and it's one of the most painfully average shows I've ever watched. I assume Yuno made it popular because she is pretty much the only reason to watch it. Or was it the random nudity too (which I believe wasn't all that common in regular anime back then)?

Yuno's the main girl character right? It was probably because of her that the show got popular, yeah. I watched the entire thing and it got...really weird at the end. Ended up liking it enough to use this as a phone notification for a while, though.

you have to keep it mind there weren't many anime of its kind at the time and access to Anime was still pretty limited . pretty much any old classic anime would be considered overrated by any current top selling Anime. Death Note, Cowboy Bebop, Evangelion are all outclassed by similar modern anime.

Most likely this.

Yuno is literally THEE crazy anime girl, she even originated, or at the very least, popularized the classic Yandere pose (just Google "yandere pose" and you'll see what I mean)

She popularized it, but I was watching an anime from the 90s Infinite Ryvius and Fina/Faina is definitely yandere.

it's revealed she murdered her ex and her friend during the beginning. She sends assassins to kill the girl her 2nd ex likes. And when her 2nd ex is shot. Instead of helping him she makes slams him to a wall while he screams and then tries to kill him. In the climax she then tries to hold him in place for him to get shot yet again.

Obviously, the best way to pick your successor as the almighty god of the universe is to force an extremely small group of people into a death game involving cell phones.

tbh I think its concept really is cool, the diaries all being very powerful superpowers that are all somewhat related yet at the same time all different with their own distinct set of strengths and weaknesses is a very good setup for this kind of battle show. evenly but not-evenly matched, you know?

actual plot is a bit dumb in a lot of places though

The concept is good but it wasn't pulled off very well. The Fate series is a better battle show, and I'm not even a huge fan of that franchise.

Yeah but all you need to hook initial interest is the concept. fate's concept is pretty good too but in a fairly different way

that sort of group themeing gimmick thing makes it stand out above other stuff in the genre at first look imo

I don't agree that Cowboy Bebop and Evangelion are outclassed. They cover themes that hit home, even today. Deathnote, sure. That one is pure entertainment.

Yuno popularized the yandere character archetype.

Obviously besides the death game premise in general she's the main reason to watch, the MC's a wuss and the villains only last 1-3 episodes each.

I don't think many people unironically argue that it's a great anime or anything. It's mostly trashy entertainment. >_>

I think some of the phone related battles were kinda interesting. Of course it was basically a Jojo-lite as most things are. Yuno was also definitely a really stand out character. Honestly all the characters except the MC weren't all that bad

I agree

At face value Yuno's diary is pretty much useless in a setting where people are trying to kill her, but combined with Yuki's its pretty broken

Jojo had Yukako in the mid 90s too. I believe Mirai Nikki is basically the one that had the yandere pretty much be the main character even if the dude is the focus character.

It came out in 2011. It was hardly the dark ages.

Mirai Nikki pissed me off. It's an excellent premise and there are such a great range of cell phone abilities. Even the dynamic where the main character's diary and his psycho girlfriend's diary compensate for each other's weaknesses is a good one.

And that premise is wasted on fucking garbage. The main character - who my friend and I called Yucky, I know that's not quite his name - is such a whiny bitch that he's just completely insufferable. The show also couldn't decide on what the hell tone it wanted to be. The one I always remember is where there's an arc where the villains are a dude who thinks he's a Power Ranger and a blind girl who wants to destroy the world because she was ritualistically gangraped as a child. Like what the fuck.
