didn't even notice this before but IV's list is really small. no Kain, Golbez or Edge. no wonder it hasn't lost any yet.

I feel like since lefty took over IV has had pretty much just 4-5 characters in at a time

Usually just Cecil/Cid P/Rydia and then a fourth being a celeb Kain/Rosa/Edward appearance

the last time IV had more than five entrants was CXVIII, and it hasn't kept more than four past boots since the FFIV MIRACLE the year prior

Before XVI I had the potential "7R Part 2" game mapped out in my mind making on 7R's structure and had things ending in Nibelheim (specifically a "final dungeon" in the mansion basement but possibly the reactor instead)

After XVI I have to VASTLY shift my expectations on how much they can do and how far they can go, jesus christ.

My logic was based on 7R's content-stretching (I've been meaning to make this post since Summer 2020 literally, if I ever did youtube content I'd probably have done something there, but I'll make this topic someday). Basically they made a "chapter" out of 2 screens from the original game in Remake so I envisioned similar stretching in an "18 chapter" game.

Even in your example, you had 1 game covering 9 "walkthrough" sections, 10 more sections takes you to Nibelheim so it'd line up that way. Or alternatively, think about all the in-fill not addressed in the walkthrough: there'll be a chocobo farm section, a "Mine to Junon" travel section, Junon is 2 chapters, travel from Costa Del Sol to North Corel, etc. Nibelheim also works as a narratively-conclusive area for a 2nd game, as bookend from the 5-years-ago story starting the game.

But again I am pretty well throwing all that out the window seeing what they did with XVI so I'm probably joining the "end of disc 1" group, yeah. I just need to think on it!

Yeah but remember that they've committed to three parts and there's still two discs after that. Any cutoff point before eod1 means you're cramming parts of disc 1 and all of 2 and 3 into one game.

Yeah that's a fair point because I drafted that plan before they announced it'd be a 3-game series, I think I had it as 4 games, again with some content stretching in addition to net new material (e.g. new Shinra-Wutai war).

Ok, new off-the-cuff theory: Nibelheim is Rebirth end of disc one, last chance to revisit locations/do quests from areas you visited freeing up Disc 2, like old-school PSX-game Disc 4 style, is that constraint still a thing with modern systems though, I don't know anything about this tech stuff.

I could've seen leaving Junon or getting the buggy being ending points for part 2 if they hadn't committed to a three part series, but after they did I can't see how they end at anything before end of disc one, especially since there isn't really a good stopping point between Cosmo Canyon (which we've seen in the trailer) and end of disc 1. Nibelheim is the only option, and only if they beef up the story around it.

I feel like the majority of the story happens on Disc 1 anyway, so you could definitely cram Discs 2 and 3 into a single game, especially if they just completely throw the original story into the trash bin by the end of Rebirth

for the record I'd be down for Year of Cid next year because FFXVI Cid is on a trajectory to dethrone Dr. Cid as the best Cid in the series

Yeah Disc 1 is the meat of the game, Disc 3 is basically final dungeon and optional stuff and Disc 2 is pretty straightforward and easy past Whirlwind Maze
