Less physical bullying but more emotional, especially via social media

oh, are you sure of that? how about this, did any of you witness bullying while you were in college? not a place particularly known for a lot of bullying, maybe

Bullying pretty much wasn't a thing when (and where) I went to school in the late 80's and 90's. I mean yeah people got bullied but it was nothing like depicted in movies from before my time like wedgies, swirlies, getting shoved in lockers, stolen lunch money, or even regular beatings. If someone got hit there were usually pretty severe punishments so it was mostly just name calling.

Again just stating my experience not trying to say stereotypical bullying wasn't a thing at all.

Definitely less physical bullying. Less overt verbal bullying as well. Teachers aren't going to laugh off a fist fight, or kids calling each other the R-word.

Probably outweighed by whatever kids are doing to each other on social media.

I feel like I see more physical fights in classrooms being posted online in the past couple years, but maybe that's just since Tik Tok got more popular.

From what I've seen in most news stories, it's shifted to primarily online social media circles.

School districts these days tend to be a lot more zero-tolerance of physical altercations (though it still happens, and tends to be recorded and posted online!) and some are even getting wise to the verbal stuff (it still varies...).

Yeah I graduated in 2001 and while physical bullying was a thing sometimes, it was nothing like depictions in the media and got handled with swift suspensions. My kids are in early grade school now and it seems to be even less of a thing these days.

It doesn't seem like it, and I say that as someone who was bullied mercilessly 15-20 years ago.

was a lot of it physical bullying? were you a minority in your school? many times if you're a part of a smaller group you might get singled out for ridicule etc....

This, considering the social media (and for the most part, the internet as a whole) wasn't even a thing when I was in high school.

Even now, when my kids come home and say there was a fight in school, there was usually a "valid" reason for it (someone got caught cheating on their girl, two guys fighting over a girl) and not "He got beat up because he likes Spiderman"

When I was in High School kids would literally get their books thrown down the hallways or dumped into the toilet simply because they got the best grade in the class.

No idea, since I'm not in school anymore. And I'd believe any statistics that come out would be based on teachers/parents experiences, or students who aren't willing to come forward with any abuse they receive, so I'm not entirely sure those can be trusted either.

This is very much what I see. The landscape has changed but bullying is still very much present.

Not really. There was just a dozen or so guys in the grade older than me that were dicks to pretty much everyone that wasn't a part of their circle of friends.

I was just some really quiet nerd (diagnosed in adulthood as autisitic) who got good grades and was liked by teachers despite being bad about doing homework.

I'd get shoved around, have things taken, get called names. When the bullies found out I had a bit of an anger problem, they started irritating me more like they wanted to push my buttons to see what would happen. They knew I wasn't actually a physical threat to them even if I hit back. They also hated that most of my teachers never seriously punished me for my outbursts. I guess the teachers could see I was a victim and that there was a reason why I was the way that I was.

This was all private school.
