Ive caused two.

I hit a tree when I was young when I hit the gas rather than the break and I hit another car doing a U-turn in a downpour. The 2nd one was both out fault, but Im the one doing the U-turn, so it was really mine.

I was rear ended by a dump truck once, did terrible damage to my car, but that was it and I was hit by a drunk driver blowing through a side street going 60mp in a neighborhood. That one almost killed me. He sheared the entire front end of my old steel carhalf a second later, it would have been a direct t-bone on medrivers side door.

you've been in 2 accidents where the car could not be repaired, or it wasn't worth the effort?

Nope, I've never been in an accident and hopefully I never will be in one. I use as many defensive driving techniques as I can, but you never know with crazy drivers out there.

The two things that put me on edge the most are when someone is following too close behind me and when I have to change lanes while there's someone directly to my side in the next lane over. I've had a few near misses with someone deciding to just no look lane change while I'm moving into that same lane...

Yeah, accidentally sideswiped a parked car on a narrow street while in high school. Pretty straightforward, got a ticket and got a bump in my rate, but the the other guy was pretty chill and we both had beater cars anyway.

Irregardless, for all intensive purposes, I could care less.

Right after I got my license, I rear ended an elderly couple (phrasing!).

I was mega apologetic, and they were totally cool about it. There was visible damage to their bumper, but they didnt even seem to care.

Tree = totaled. I actually flipped the car when I hit the tree. Small tree, 25 tall, maybe 10-12 diameter. Hit it front center bumper, rode up the treeno shitthen *boing* I was looking at sky, then *crash* upside down in the middle of the street. Tree was pushed back upright and that was it.

Drunk driver = totaled. Dude was driving a fiberglass Honda and sheared the entire front end of my 84 Lebaron, big steel boat. My engine was in pieces all over the road.

Dump truck and U-turn were just repairs.

BTW, Ive been driving nearly 45 years now. The tree was 30 years ago, the drunk driver was a year after that, dump truck was 15 years ago and the U-turn was 6-7 years ago.

Nope. I do need to buy one at some point though. It can potentially be the only evidence that stops a liar from getting off the hook for an accident. I did office work at CHP for a few years and I saw several people lie their way out of being at fault for an accident. It's wild what some people can get away with.

I once stayed up for over 48 hours studying for an exam. On the way home from the exam, less than half a mile from my house, I rear ended a vehicle while we were turning into a curve to merge into traffic.

He moved forward and I mistakenly thought he was going to keep going while I turned to look for other oncoming cars. But he'd stopped, so I ended up hitting him. Cracked this little thing on the front of my car, but the other vehicle was undamaged. It was a really light tap.

The guy gave me a stern reprimand to pay attention, but decided not to make a big deal out of it since his vehicle was unaffected. Only "accident" I've been in, as the driver anyway.

That's the main reason to get one yeah. Proof when you're in an accident.

But it would also be useful if you just want footage of a road trip or a scenic area.

Been in 2.

First one was my fault, a minor fender bender. My orange juice bottle fell under the brake peddle, reached to get it, wasnt able to stop completely in time, tapped the truck in front of me. No damage to the pickup truck, but ofc my car received a lovely parting gift of a small dent.

2nd time, was driving in the rain and the car behind me lost control and clipped the back of my car. My car then span out of control and I ended up hitting a guard rail. Car was totalled but I was lucky no one hit me and I walked out with only a few cuts and bruises.

Nope. I drive the speed limit, come to complete stops at stop signs, and generally drive safely. I've never been involved in an accident at all as a driver, let alone been at fault for one.

Twice

First was me turning at an intersection a little too fast when it was icy out
Drifted into someone turning perpendicular to me at like 3 mph
I pulled off the road, they did too but like a hundred meters away
They got out, looked at their car, and drove off

Second time i misjudged a tight parking space and scratched another car
Left a note with my contact info
Got a text the next day say the scratch rubbed right off

So... no consequences either time

This is pretty irrelevant to getting in an accident. Sure driving safely lowers your risks, but plenty of safe drivers get into accident due to no fault of their own.

Ive not been at fault for any accidents with other cars but Ive hit a few dumpsters, parking posts, etc. over the years.

I have been in 3, maybe 4 accidents, all not at fault, in 25+ years of driving and ~half a million miles

My first accident was turning in a very narrow driveway. Still have the scratches and the cracked right mirror.

The second was obviously a guy who tried to go pass on my left when I was turning left. He tried to blame me for signaling right. But in the end I was the only one with the light scratch on the car.

Nope. Had a woman rear end me when I stopped for someone making a turn, and also had a tractor-trailer run me off the road and ended up hitting an old tire that was in the median. It was dark so I didn't see it. Messed up the front of my car a bit.
