I spent a lot of time with Lego, Duplo, Tinkertoys, and K'Nex. I'd include Playmobil, I played a lot with those when I was younger. Lego wins by far. Duplo was pretty great as a 5 year old or younger. K'Nex gets 2nd to Lego because the sets were pretty badass.

I've played with many of them, but growing up K'nex was almost my favorite. I guess part of what I liked was how you could build large contraptions with relatively few pieces. I'll always remember the Big Ball Factory set. It had 3000 pieces and stood about 5 feet tall, which was taller than me at the time. They also had the rollercoaster set, which is something Lego didn't do until many years later. Oh, and the other thing I like more about K'nex is how there's only a few dozen core pieces, so you could buy any set and you'll get pieces that can be used to make whatever. But with Lego, you probably have like 10,000 different pieces at this point and certain pieces only come in certain sets, so it's an expensive chore if you want to track down what you want. And lastly, you can build things that are extremely rigid and durable. I'll take this opportunity to show off my Master Sword:

You can swing it as much as you want and it won't budge. Like to see someone attempt that with Lego!

K'nex, followed by Legos

My favorite was the rollercoaster set. I got it for Christmas, and played with it until next Christmas. Mainly because I built it where the tree went I did continue to play with it a little longer, though

I'm pretty sure you can order any of the parts from Lego directly. The Lego stores themselves have them too.

There are limits to what's available, since some parts are discontinued, but even with the ability to order them that still means having to order parts instead of reliably getting some of everything just by having multiple sets. I do generally prefer Lego, but for more free-form building K'nex is definitely more accessible.

Labo, which I always forget about promptly after I'm reminded of it. It seems like so long ago.

What would they do if somebody orders an old set and it has missing pieces like those?

Even though I had a crap ton of Lego, I recall having a lot more fun with Construx and Robotix.

Hell, even though the brand changed hands a few times, you could still buy all the old Robotix sets until the most recent company to sell the brand had to halt production due to COVID-19 in 2021. Part of me wishes I'd had the space and money to pick up a couple of them while I still had the chance.

Usually, if a piece is discontinued and you can't order it anymore, any sets containing it are also discontinued. Most Lego sets are only available for a few years anyway, though that's more to capitalize on FOMO than a matter of discontinuing parts that it relies on.

It's almost unfair to compare those others with Lego, but K'nex does get points for practicality.
