For me personally, yes, I would be terrible with money if I couldn't live off of that. I'm fully aware that is not a lot of money for some people. If I lived in Los Angeles or New York, I might struggle even with that much.

Even in California I routinely get racist comments

Eh, that's more like "survive", not "live". Also, we're missing some context here. Like what's your housing situation? Do you pay for health insurance? Are you able to save any money?

If you have no children or other dependents and are healthy, $80k is plenty to live on even in the most expensive cities in the US. In the cheapest cities, you can live extremely well. Even $30k is enough to enjoy some luxuries if you're willing to live with roommates.

I don't think people are entitled to live alone, so we'll have to agree to disagree on that.

I'm also skeptical that you can't live alone on $80k in CA or NYC. Maybe not in Manhattan or in SF, but you should be able to find a place a little further out.

I'm now curious what kinds of things you consider essential that others would consider a luxury.

moving further out increases the chances of needing 1 or 2 cars, depending on your fam situation. Just added expenses.

To name a few: being able to heat/cool the house without worries about how it impacts the utility bill, a few streaming services, stretchy pants (youd be surprised how many people wear 100% cotton pants), not splitting the bill on dates

Those are all relatively cheap. I'm still not sure how you wouldn't be able to afford that on $80k/yr, even in CA.

As someone who was broke ass borderline homeless poor(and actually do at one point) growing up... Where and how you live makes a WORLD of difference.

I couldn't make it where I grew up around Chicago, I just couldn't get ahead with my situation as it was. So I left to one of those states no one ever talks about. I very comfortably managed to live off of 12k a year in the beginning. It's been about a decade there now and I've gotten my life completely in order, saved every scrap of cash I could, and will likely be moving out within a year or so to a better job market.

A lot of the time, suffering is a choice you have no idea you're making. The pressure to keep up and fit in when you desperately need to look out for yourself is a easy trap.

Simple fact is, there's a lot of factors. If I made 80k here I would probably be living like a goddamn king lol, but it's also just not feasible everywhere out there.

The majority of is the country lives paycheck to paycheck.

And in 2021, a survey showed that for adults between ages 25 and 34, only 11.7% of men and 9% of women lived alone. I believe that it's because millennials are struggling to survive while living alone.

Yes it is. You can live well on that by yourself in NYC, you can contribute 10% to your 401K and your take home pay would be a little more than $50K. That's over $4K a month to pay rent, food, entertainment, etc.

First, I dont consider living alone a luxury. Then you can always argue to get more roommates and just continually split the rentwhat 5 times?

Im 36, Im not living with a roommate

2k isnt enough. You can rent off that, but mortgage is higher. Unless you want to live in the suburbs but who wants to do that

And I dont even think you can reach 2k budget for rent on 80k/year, especially not if youre contributing to retirement

For the record, my mortgage and HOA is 3k/month
