Russia will regard Western F-16 fighter jets sent to Ukraine as a nuclear threat because of their capacity to carry atomic weapons, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Thursday.
Modern warplanes have been at the forefront of Kyivs demands for military aid from its Western allies as it fights back against Russias offensive.
Lavrov spoke of a US plan to transfer F-16s to Ukraine, although Washington has not given the go-ahead for any country to supply them.
Russia cannot ignore the ability of these aircraft to carry nuclear weapons. No amount of assurances will help here, Lavrov was quoted as saying by the Russian foreign ministry.
In the course of combat operations, our servicemen are not going to sort out whether each particular aircraft of this type is equipped to deliver nuclear weapons or not.

We will regard the very fact that the Ukrainian armed forces have such systems as a threat from the West in the nuclear sphere.
The Netherlands and Denmark are leading a plan to train Ukrainian pilots on using the US-made aircraft as part of an 11-nation coalition.
The programme will begin in Denmark in August after the United States authorised the move.

Great but it takes years to train a fighter pilot proper. So even if they expedite them through or something its going to take a good while before any gains come from this.

We used to meet in Finland as a neutral (pro-USSR really) location to discuss these kinds of issues. Not any more though.

Another country could theoretically supply them, though. Far more compelling is that Ukraine wouldn't be irresponsible enough to use them, not even defensively.

The only person supplying nuclear weapons to eastern European countries is Vladimir Putin. To Belarus.

I almost posted the meme Metallica did above. As you can imagine, both get lots of use with Russia constantly threatening nuclear escalation for over a year now.

sometimes i would love to see what would happen if the world got tired of his BS and told Putin to either put up or shut up and leave Ukraine because if he doesn't it's the world that it's going to launch nukes on putin

No, but the transitioning from their old fighter jets to the F-16s won't be a 1-1. So it'll still take a good amount of time to train them proficiently.

So you're telling me Putin will threaten nukes and see anything as an act of war even without Ukraine formally being in NATO. Shockingly shocked I am.

Russia and nuclear provocations is like the Chinese dynasty where eventually every insult to the emperor was punishable by death.

Except Putin is largely impotent and has been un-mothballing WW2 tanks because all his modern toys are exploded hulks in Ukraine.

Honestly the old planes they had were harder to fly. The F-16 is pretty intuitive by comparison.

Getting up to speed on the weapon systems, learning the limits of the aircraft would be necessary but theyre basically going to out them through an accelerated version of the flight training that includes everything we give new pilots.

They dont want any mistakes if they can avoid them.

Honestly this time of year is probably best for the delivery, as they can spend the winter training and then when fighting picks back up after the mud season passes, exert air superiority
