If you can go to cooking school and learn all the arbitrary rules of plating techniques and its nuances, then studying math is no different. If you can see things in layers and know when to apply a certain set of rules, then it's just a matter of adjusting your applied knowledge in a way that makes sense to you. I feel like unless you're going beyond Calc 3, learning Math is no different than trying to make Duck Pt en Crote.

For me, it's different with physical things that I can think of and interact with, and just a page of letters and numbers that are all abstract.

Just how my brain prefers to work I guess.

Calculus is difficult for most people. Liberal arts people at my school struggled with basic math, business majors struggled with their lite version of calculus and even stem people would retake the class often.

I know chem majors who struggled with calculus. Without a strong understanding of Algebra, it's difficult to understand how to setup problems in Calculus. Hell, I doubt most people can even do a trig sub without something to reference. Many colleges let students get away with using a table of integrals for these problems on tests.

It's also weird to say liberal arts majors struggle with calculus since physics, philosophy, and math all fall under liberal arts.

It's very different, math is difficult for people who have no deduction power.

Cooking is just trial and error. You just watch someone do it and repeat the process over and over again until you perfect it.

Math has rules, but variables are always different and people with no deduction power can't figure shit out. They're just good for stuff where you memorize everything and repeat it to death.

But cooking also requires deductive reasoning as well. For example, if you know that all cakes need eggs (general statement) and you want to make a cake (hypothesis), then you can deduce that you need to buy eggs (conclusion). Then there's also inductive reasoning, where if you notice that every time you add salt to water, it boils faster (observation), then you can infer that salt lowers the boiling point of water.

It's not just trial and error if you want to become a great chef.

My math teachers were either bad or boring. I think one of the issues with Math is you don't use the info outside the class or have real world example to fall back on to keep you engaged with the subject.

I think maybe because it's not visual/physical?

If you mix/bake a cake incorrectly, you'll get a subpar product that you can visually see.

If you solve a calculus problem incorrectly, you'll get numbers.

If I can't visualize the process, it's extremely difficult for me to understand it.

So I struggle with algebra and calculus, but do extremely well in trigonometry and physics.

I think it might become easier if you show a few application of calculus to those having trouble.

I guess the most common/identifiable is application with velocity and acceleration?

Kinda? Velocity and acceleration is more associated with physics, but derivatives from Calc 1 do show the "rate" of things so I guess it fits >_>

I thought velocity/acceleration relation was something most people could identify with, and it'd be a good way to "visualize" calculus for newer students.

College is not purely for job training

Learning about art, literature, philosophy, etc. makes you a more-rounded human being with better critical thinking skills. It also makes you less likely to fall into political and religious zealotry

I did honors precal and AP Calc in high school. I didn't do spectacularly well but I grasped it okay and passed. I then went to get a degree in music. I was always strong in math and sciences but wanted to study arts in college.

So yeah, what Error said.

Calc 2 is a beast. I remember people telling me to pray for a good grade and that they themselves barely passed. I already graduated and let me tell you, no math class was as hard as calc 2, I was actually disappointed at the lack of difficulty afterwards.

Philosophy also goes hand in hand with a lot of the history of physics. Political science is deeply intertwined with engineering, since what engineering projects get greenlit is 100% based in politics.

STEM majors that let their social science proficiency slip don't tend to make very good coworkers in my experience

In terms of difficulty from hardest to easiest:

Calc 5 (Laplace Transformation and other bullshit)
Calc 4 (Differential Equations)
Calc 2

[Power Gap]

Calc 3 (Multivariable)
Calc 1

It was a Godsend how much easier Calc 3 was compared to 2. It's literally just Calc 1 but in 3D and with multiple variables.

I did but the professor was so good I did not struggle with those at all. Our class was a mix of dif EQ and linear algebra but I loved linear algebra far more. Almost made me switch from engineering to math just so I could grasp more of what we were barely shown.

I agree with the last bit. Calc 2 left me traumatized so much that I dreaded calc 3 going in, but ended up breezing through it.
