It's typically up for on, and down for off. My local community hall's restrooms have switches that are the other way, yet the switches throughout the rest of the building are normal.

Which way doesn't really matter anyway.

Up always seems appropriate for on, but I don't know if that's just because that's what I'm used to. I'm an electrician so there's another reason why it feels right.

One could always install a switch upside down if they want it the other way.

A few of our lights have multiple places to turn them on.

Sounds like 3way/4way switches. Can't really do anything to make them all turn off/on uniformly as far as I know.

Yes, but she will typically use only 1 switch. For example our kitchen has 2 entrances (well one is the dining side, other kitchen) she will typically use the kitchen side switch to turn the lights off. Our front door is in between the kitchen and dining room. This also has a switch on it which she likes to keep that switch in a certain position

Literally doesn't matter. It's not like you're not going to try the other method if a light isn't turned on anyway, and it only takes a fraction of a second to try.

Edit: The house I grew up in, there was a light switch at the bottom and the top of a stairwell for the same ceiling light, so "On" was always Up or Down depending on which way you were coming from, so the switch being in either position never bothered me.

Defeats purpose of multiple switches. I answered poll before reading first post. Single switch installation: up on. But for multiple switches, it is what it is.

My hallway light upstairs has a switch at the bottom of the stairs and the top so the switches change depending on which is used. Then again I use wifi lighting so I haven't used it in 2 years.

Up=on seems objectively correct.

Now, should left or right be on?
