...officials say:

Three Marine lance corporals from Camp Lejeune found dead in a vehicle Sunday morning outside a North Carolina store died of carbon monoxide poisoning, officials said Wednesday.

Deputies found the bodies around 9 a.m. Sunday in the parking lot of a Hampstead convenience store, about one hour from the military training facility. The deputies were responding to a missing person report, the Pender County Sheriff's Office said. The office had received a phone call on Sunday morning from a woman who said her son, a Marine, had failed to arrive on a flight to Oklahoma the night before.

Later that morning, deputies found the body of the missing Marine, along with those of the two other Marines, inside the vehicle.

Autopsies performed Wednesday by the office of the North Carolina Medical Examiner revealed all the deaths were due to carbon monoxide poisoning, Pender County officials said. No further details about the circumstances of their deaths were given.

The men were identified by the U.S. Marine Corps Tuesday as Tanner J. Kaltenberg, 19, of Madison, Wisconsin; Merax C. Dockery, 23, of Pottawatomie, Oklahoma; and Ivan R. Garcia, 23, of Naples, Florida. All three were motor vehicle operators with Combat Logistics Battalion 2, Combat Logistics Regiment 2 and 2nd Marine Logistics Group. The vehicle they were in was privately owned.

Garcia had been on active duty the longest of the three, entering service in July 2019, officials said. Dockery entered active duty service in June 2020 and Kaltenberg entered active duty service in May 2021.

Garcia served in Parris Island, South Carolina; Camp Lejeune, North Carolina and Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. His military awards include the National Defense Service Medal, Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation and the Global War on Terror Service Medal.

Kaltenberg served in San Diego and in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. His military awards include the National Defense Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Medal, Navy Arctic Service Ribbon and the Global War on Terror Service Medal.

Dockery served in San Diego; Camp Pendleton, California and Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. His military awards include the National Defense Service Medal, Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation and the Global War on Terror Service Medal.

"I am saddened by the timeless and tragic death of these three youg men, who served our country honorably. Our thoughts and prayers remain with their families and colleagues during this time," Pender County Sheriff Alan W. Cutler said.

Probably not. Guessing they wanted to take a nap with the AC on or something like that so they left the car running and the gas just pooled around them. Then they couldn't wake up.

Is this an actual danger with modern cars? I sometimes do day trips where it makes no sense to spend $100+ on a hotel for a few hours or sleep when I can just take a quick nap in a parking lot when I'm driving home at night.

Yes. I used to do it too until I found out it could kill you. If there's a wind current you're probably going to be ok but I wouldn't take that risk anymore. Carbon monoxide is dangerous stuff. By the time you realize it's killing you it's too late and you just want to go to sleep.

Yea, probably an accident. If they were intentionally trying to kill themselves they probably would have tried it in an enclosed garage and/or ran a hose from the car exhaust to the interior of the car.

Unfortunately this type of thing happens more often than people think. IIRC it almost happened to Herschel Walker, except it was heat in winter.

You should absolutely never sleep in a running car. A number of things could happen.

On a road trip, the car is moving, and even if the windows are up, some amount of air is circulating through it. In a parked position, it may not be, and if there's no wind to blow the CO away, it can build up around the car.

Try watching someone blow a big vape cloud while moving, vs standing still in wind, vs standing still in still air. Similar physics, but vape is visible. Not 100% identical of course but you should get a general idea of it from this.

On a road trip you tend to be moving

Its the sitting still for long periods part thats the problem.

so were they hotboxing a car in a store parking lot or something? I used to sit in my car with it running for 30-45 mins at a time on my breaks and even slept on 2 hour breaks and never passed out, and my old car's exhaust was so bad I had to have the entire system replaced.

even if you have an exhaust leak if it's outside shouldn't it just dissipate? unless using the A/C causes it go into the vehicle

I understand in high snow areas some people keep exhaust hoses on hand in their car.

If you're trapped or stranded you can hook the hose up to the muffler and run the car in deep snow.

Being in an immobile running car vs. mobile is a big difference. If you're moving, the carbon monoxide dissipates, whereas if you're immobile, it can collect around you, especially if there's no wind. It doesn't require being buried in snow or anything. This is a fact that appears to escape a large amount of people.

EDIT: If you're awake, that's one thing, as you're likely to notice that it is becoming harder to breathe, and so on. When you're sleeping, it's a different matter all together.
