Theft is theft. Mitigating circumstances can affect the severity of the crime and its resulting punishment, but it's still theft no matter what. At the very least, if you steal something, you're a thief. Not making any quantitative judgement on how 'bad' it is, but don't defend theft. Theft is a crime. Big or small, don't encourage people to steal.

Depends on who you ask. For America as a country, corporations have more rights than the average person. To a leftist, anyone who makes a living by exploiting the labor of workers and selling necessary things for living shouldn't have as many rights.

The main point is...if you're going to shrug off theft "because the company makes billions" you're still a theft apologist. Society would collapse if everybody stole things "because they needed them."

I need food, too. But I pay for it. I don't have a lot of money, but I pay for the things I need. With all the assistance programs and whatnot available, there's really no excuse to be out there stealing food unless you're doing something wrong somewhere.

If we're getting philosophical with it, theft can absolutely be justified in a number of circumstances and can even be a moral positive. I don't this really applies much to modern America outside of very niche cases, but my point is that a human's life is more important than a commodity, so yes, I can defend theft on that framework.

I've said like three or four times that most of what I'm talking about doesn't really apply to the case presented in the OP. The premise I'm stating is that if someone would die without food, then yes, theft is defensible. I'm not defending this case of theft, just the premise that theft can be justified.

The most obvious case examples are apartheid regimes (i.e. it is moral to steal from a government that is actively oppressing/trying to kill you) but these are less common than they were a few decades ago

Can't say I'm surprised CE will find literally any excuse to justify crime.

if someone is stealing food to survive the theft would absolutely be justified. if this thief had just stolen like a loaf of bread or some noodles or something it would be much harder to condemn, but getting caught stealing at the same place 3 times in a month and stealing lube and air freshner is clearly not someone stealing to survive.

The lube Ill grant you but condoms should be available for free.

I don't care that she got arrested, would probably feel different if she was just stealing necessities, but I also wouldn't have cared if she had gotten away with it. Nobody cares when the fat cats get away with it, and they do a lot more damage than this random thief.

I bet those who defend the woman stealing wouldn't want her to steal in their store if they owned a store but since it's someone else's problem they think stealing is the right and humane thing to do which is wrong. Just go to food donation places and they'll give you food to survive for free.

Namely, I'd like to remind you of the fact that corporate wage theft surpasses all other forms of retail theft COMBINED. I'd also like to remind you that nobody faces any jail time for said wage theft. At most, they may be expected to just... pay the money back (that is of course after they have made more money off of having your money... you WERE a banker right? Before the hand of capitalism hung you out to dry?). Most likely of course they just are expected to pay a fine that's a tiny fraction of the amount they stole. Even in the face of the harshest penalties it is still more profitable for corporations to steal than not. Meanwhile they still get to keep spending your money to lobby for laws that continue to benefit them and further penalize theft of about a hundred dollars in food and household supplies. Jail time for taking part in the largest and most destructive form of retail theft is completely out of the question.

And yes yes I know, you have your typical canned "Well wage theft is bad tooooooo" line in your back pocket. It ain't worth the last drip off a septic hose though, because the only thing that ever prompts you to address that is the exact scenario we're in right here, and yet in the years on end I've known you on this site I have never once seen you pass up an oppurtunity to talk shit about THE POORS comitting petty shoplifting and mocking them when their life gets ruined for it. Nobody actually believes that you have even the tiniest sliver of empathy for people.

1/3 is a bit reaching. In all due reality I am certain those 1/3 also have stolen at least once. It is wrong yes, but to keep doing it over and over and over and over again is what police catch up on. I work in a supermarket and theft is huge there especially if they know what to grab in case of reselling stuff like Baby Formula, Razor Blades, and High end Meat and Seafood. Every once in a while you'll get some hunrgy homeless one here and there but seems the store don't care as much about them people even though it is still illegal.
